The $200 bonus offer is available nationwide to all new Chase Bank checking customers except those who live in Hawaii, Alaska, or Puerto Rico.
You're considered a new customer if you:
- Don't have a checking account with Chase
- Haven't closed a Chase account within the past 90 days
- Have never closed a Chase account with a negative balance
The current $200 bonus isn't unheard of; in the past, Chase has offered $150, $200, and $300 bonuses for the Total Checking account. Check out all of Chase's current promotions here.
How to Get the Bonus
You can get the bonus by signing up for a Chase Total Checking account online or in person.
Here's how:
- Open an account: Either have the coupon emailed to you if you're opening it in person or apply online.
- Set up direct deposit: This can be a payment from an employer or the government in the form of a paycheck, pension, or benefits like Social Security.
- Direct deposit within 90 days: There's no minimum required amount.
- Receive your bonus: It will be credited to your account within 10 business days.
- Keep the account open for at least 6 months: If you or Chase closes it before then, the $200 will be deducted from your balance.
That bonus might not be worth it if you have to pay the Total Checking Account's monthly fees. It's easy to waive them, though.
How to Waive Chase Total Checking Monthly Fees
The Total Checking account charges a $12 monthly fee unless you meet ONE of the following conditions:
- Have monthly direct deposits of at least $500
- Keep at least $1,500 in the account every day
- Keep an average of at least $5,000 in all linked Chase accounts
Monthly fees are fairly standard in most traditional checking accounts. Before you sign up for a Chase Total Checking account, make sure it has all of the features you need.
