Is Chase Total Checking good? For basic bank services like deposits, withdrawals and transfers, Chase Total Checking is a good option. While you won't earn interest on your balance, there is a big bonus offer available if requirements are met. We'll explain below.

Bonus Offer and Qualifications

Chase is offering a $200 bonus for new Chase Total Checking customers. Follow these steps to claim the bonus:

  1. Open a Chase Total Checking Account

  2. Set up a qualifying direct deposit within 90 days; a qualifying direct deposit must come from either an employer or the government in the form of a paycheck, pension, or benefits like Social Security

  3. Keep the account open for at least 6 months

You should receive the bonus within 10 days of the requirements being met. Read on to learn about the features of the Chase Total Checking account.

Restrictions to the Bonus Offer
The $200 bonus offer is only available to new customers. A new customer is someone who has not had a Chase Total Checking account within the past 90 days.

You won't be eligible for the $200 bonus if you:

  • Are an existing Chase checking customer
  • Have a fiduciary account with Chase
  • Closed a Chase checking account within the past 90 days
  • Have an account with a negative balance
  • Live in Alaska, Hawaii, or Puerto Rico

Sign-up bonuses are considered taxable interest. You'll need to include the $200 bonus on Form 1099-INT when filing your taxes for the year that you received the funds.

Account Features

Chase doesn't require a minimum opening deposit for its Total Checking. The account offers:

  • Access to 16,000 ATMs

  • More than 4,700 branches to visit

  • Online banking including free bill pay service

  • Mobile banking with the Chase Mobile App

  • QuickDeposit: Deposit checks by simply snapping a picture

  • Free debit card

  • Account alerts via text, email, or push notifications when there is a charge, refund, or transaction

The Chase Total Checking account is available to everyone, except those residing in Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico.

Chase Total Checking account has a $12 monthly service fee. But you can avoid it by doing any one of the following:

  • Have over $500 of direct deposits into the account each month

  • Keep a daily balance of at least $1,500

  • Maintain an average daily balance of at least $5,000 across a combination of qualifying Chase checking, savings, and other accounts

Pros and Cons

  • More than 4,700 branches and 16,000 ATMs
  • No minimum deposit requirement to open an account
  • Easy requirements for earning the $200 bonus

  • Monthly maintenance fee of $12, although avoidable
  • Fees for wires, overdrafts, and insufficient funds
  • Chase only operates in 28 states

How to Open a Chase Total Checking Account

You have two options for applying:

  • Online
You'll be asked to provide basic information such as name, address, SSN, and a government ID number.

  • At a Chase Branch
Enter your email on Chase's website to receive a bonus offer coupon. Take the coupon and your photo ID to your closest Chase branch to open an account with a representative.

Applying for the Chase Total Checking account will result in a soft pull on your credit. This will not negatively impact your credit score.

Bottom Line

Opening a Chase Total Checking account as a new customer can earn you a $200 bonus. All you need to do is set up a direct deposit within the first 90 days from either an employer or the government.
