Chase Total Checking®

Chase Total Checking® is Chase's most popular checking account. It's a no-frills basic checking account with some perks, like Overdraft Assist℠.

*With Chase Overdraft Assist℠, Chase won't charge an Overdraft Fee if you're overdrawn by $50 or less at the end of the business day OR if you're overdrawn by more than $50 and you bring your account balance to overdrawn by $50 or less at the end of the next business day (you have until 11 PM ET (8 PM PT) to make a deposit or transfer). Chase Overdraft Assist does not require enrollment and comes with eligible Chase checking accounts.

The monthly fee is also easy to waive. As long as you get $500 in electronic deposits each month, you can use the account for free.

$12 or $0 with one of the following, each monthly statement period:
  • Electronic deposits made into this account totaling $500 or more, such as payments from payroll providers or government benefit providers, by using (i) the ACH network, (ii) the Real Time Payment or FedNow℠ network, (iii) third party services that facilitate payments to your debit card using the Visa® or Mastercard® network,
  • OR a balance at the beginning of each day of $1,500 or more in this account,
  • OR an average beginning day balance of $5,000 or more in any combination of this account and linked qualifying Chase checking, savings, and other balances.

Chase Business Complete Banking

Chase Business Complete Banking is a unique business checking account that includes built-in payment processing. It lets you accept credit card payments from anywhere with Chase's mobile app. And plus - you'll get funds from sales deposited into your business checking account the same day.

The monthly service fee can be waived in a number of ways. The easiest is to maintain a $2,000 daily balance.

Chase Secure Banking

If you can't qualify for Chase Total Checking, the Chase Secure Banking account is a good, low-cost alternative. This account has no overdraft fees. You can only spend what you have available.

There are no fees for overdrafts, check deposits, online bill pay, Zelle®, money orders, and cashier's checks.

Chase College Checking

Chase College Checking Account has no monthly service fee while in school up to the graduation date provided at account opening (five years maximum) for students 17-24 years old.

What to Know About Chase Checking Account Bonuses

To qualify for Chase's sign up bonus, here are some general rules you need to know:

Bonuses are for new customers only
This doesn't mean that you must be a first-time Chase customer. You could qualify even you've had Chase accounts before. The rules for Chase bonus offers are that you:

  • Cannot be an existing Chase checking customer.
  • Cannot have had an account closed in the past 90 days.
  • Cannot have closed an account with a negative balance within the last 3 years.

You can get both a personal and business checking bonus
One big benefit is that personal and business checking are treated as separate products. So even if you already have a personal checking account with Chase, you can still apply and earn the Chase business checking welcome bonus.

Only one checking bonus every 2 years
You can only receive one checking-related bonus every 2 years (from date of your last enrollment), and only one bonus per account. This ensures that you don't just keep opening bank accounts for the offers.

Again, personal and business are separate. If you got a Chase personal checking account bonus, you can still get a Chase business checking bonus within 2 years.

You need a unique offer code
To apply for a Chase checking sign up bonus, you need to provide your email address to get your personalized offer code. You can get your coupon code through our offer link.

You can apply two ways:

  • If you apply online, the coupon code will be automatically applied.
  • Or you can bring your code to your local Chase bank to apply in person.

Chase Checking Bonus FAQs

How long does it take to get the Chase bonus?
Typically, Chase will deposit your checking bonus into your new account within 15 business days of completing all qualifying activities. So the sooner you complete the requirements, the sooner you'll get your cash bonus.

If you don't see the bonus in your Chase account after 15 business days, you can ask Chase customer service at 1-800-935-9935.

Do Chase checking bonuses expire?
Yes, Chase bank promotions have an expiration date. We list the expiration date, so be sure to pay attention and apply before the offer expires.

Are Chase bonuses taxed?
Welcome cash bonuses for opening a bank account are considered interest. You will get an IRS Form 1099-INT from Chase by January 31 each year if they paid you $10 or more in interest, and you'll be required to report it as interest income on your taxes.[1][2]

Can I close my Chase checking account after receiving the bonus?
You must keep your Chase account open for 6 months after enrollment. If you close your account before that time, Chase will deduct the bonus amount for that account at closing.

Can I use multiple Chase Bank promotions?
No, you can only get one Chase checking account bonus every 2 years. The exception is that you can earn bonuses for both a personal and business Chase account.

Chase Bank Pros & Cons

Besides generous bank account bonuses, Chase Bank is known for providing great full service banking with excellent customer service.

Here are some pros and cons of banking with Chase.

Pros:

  • More than 4,700 physical branches and 15,000 ATMs nationwide
  • No minimum deposit to open account
  • Many checking options for all financial situations
  • Free online bill pay, mobile deposits, and text banking
  • 24/7 customer service with real reps
  • Highly rated mobile app
  • Full service bank with checking and savings, credit cards, loans, and investing
  • FDIC insured up to $250,000[3][4]

Cons:

  • Low interest rates on savings accounts
  • Not located in all states
  • Requirements to waive monthly fees
  • High out-of-network ATM fees
  • Many banking fees

BOTTOM LINE

Chase is a solid option if you're looking for a nationwide bank with lots of services. It frequently rolls out new checking account sign-up bonuses. Requirements to earn the bonus are relatively easy. So it's a nice way to get a little jumpstart if you're in the market for a new checking account.

Just note that many Chase accounts have monthly service fees. Make sure you can meet the requirements to waive that fee. Otherwise, it won't make sense to open a checking account for the bonus, but then be burdened with a monthly fee.
