Not all routing numbers are the same for Wells Fargo. Here's how to find the routing number for your bank account.

Wells Fargo Routing Numbers by State

Your routing number is associated with the location of the bank where you opened your account. Even if you bank at another Wells Fargo branch, what matters is the bank where you originally opened your account.

*Southern California Wells Fargo customers may see a different routing number on their checks. You can use either the number displayed above or the one printed on your checks.

If you don't see your region listed or don't remember where you opened your Wells Fargo account, read on for more ways to find your routing number.

Ways to Find Your Wells Fargo Routing Number

Routing numbers are 9-digit numbers that banks use to identify themselves. Think of them as addresses that let other banks know where to find your money.

You need your routing number for many tasks, including:

  • ACH payments
  • Setting up direct deposit
  • Receiving benefits from the government, including tax refunds
  • Transferring money between accounts at different banks or investment firms
  • Automatic bill payment
  • Domestic wire transfers

Many banks have several routing numbers, especially those with branches in more than one state. Wells Fargo uses separate routing numbers for different regions.

Here are several other ways to find your Wells Fargo routing number:

Use A Check
The routing number for checking accounts is the first 9 digits located on the bottom left of every check.

Wells Fargo savings accounts use the same routing numbers as checking accounts.

Go Online
Wells Fargo has an online form you can fill out to locate your correct routing number and account number. Find it here.

You can also find your routing number by searching "routing number" at the top of the screen after you've logged into your Wells Fargo online account.

Call Customer Service
If you don't have online checking or a check handy, call Wells Fargo at 800-956-4442. After you provide a few details to identify yourself, a representative will be able to confirm your account's routing number.

Breaking Down Your Routing Number
The first four digits pertain to the Federal Reserve. The next four digits are unique to your bank. Consider those the bank's address for the Federal Reserve. The final digit is a mathematical calculation of the first eight digits—it's used to prevent check fraud.

Routing Numbers for Domestic/International Wire Transfers

Wire transfers are a faster way to send money than an ACH transfer. There is typically a fee, however. You can make a wire transfer by visiting a Wells Fargo branch.

For an online wire transfer, follow these steps:

  1. Sign onto your Wells Fargo account online.
  2. Select the Wire Money option in the Transfer & Pay menu
  3. Add required recipient details (more on this below).

Wells Fargo Wire Transfer Fees
Incoming (Domestic) Wire: $15
Outgoing (Domestic) Wire: $30

Incoming and outgoing international wire transfer costs depend on the provider, destination, transaction amount, and the mode of sending money. They can also cost more if you choose to use Wells Fargo's foreign currency exchange service.

Domestic Wire Transfer Routing Number
Use the Wells Fargo domestic wire transfer routing number 121000248 instead of your regular ABA routing number.

You'll also need the following information for domestic wires:

  • The name of the person to whom you're wiring funds (the "beneficiary") as it appears on their account

  • The name and address of the beneficiary's bank

  • The routing number of the beneficiary's bank

  • The beneficiary's account number

International Wire Transfer Routing Number
Use the Wells Fargo SWIFT code WFBIUS6S for all international wires to or from your Wells Fargo account.

SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication) codes are the international equivalents of the US routing numbers. They direct the money to the correct bank for international transfers.

You'll also need the following information for international wires:

  • The name of the person to whom you're wiring funds ("the beneficiary") as it appears on their account

  • The name and address of the beneficiary's bank

  • The beneficiary's account number

  • The SWIFT Code of your bank and the bank you are sending to

  • Currency being sent

  • Purpose of payment

Before submitting a wire transfer for processing, it's a good idea to double-check you have all the necessary information entered correctly.

PRO TIP: When you send or receive money using your bank, you might lose out on a bad exchange rate and pay hidden fees as a result. That's because most banks still use an old system to exchange money. Consider using Wise, which is usually much cheaper.

Which Wells Fargo Routing Number Should You Use?

For any domestic money transfer activity
Use the ABA routing number of the state where you opened your Wells Fargo account from the list above.

For any domestic wire transfers
Use the Wells Fargo domestic wire transfer routing number 121000248.

For international wire transfers
Use the Wells Fargo SWIFT code WFBIUS6S.

Is There a Routing Number on Your Debit or Credit Card?
Although your debit card is associated with a bank account, you do not use a routing number for debit card transactions. Routing numbers are only used for transfers directly between bank accounts.

Likewise, credit cards do not have routing numbers since they are not directly linked to any bank account. When you pay your credit card online, you may need to use your bank account routing number to set up the link between your credit card account and checking account, like you would for any other bill.

Bottom Line

You'll likely need your Wells Fargo routing number when managing your finances. Keep it handy should you need to set up a direct deposit, automatic payment, or wire transfer.
