- Overdraft Protection. To protect your checking account from overdrafts, you can link a M&T savings account, credit card, or Overdraft Line of Credit. Funds will automatically be transferred to cover the overdraft. There is a transfer fee (though it's a lot less than the overdraft fee) and an interest rate will apply if you're using credit. You must enroll in this protection plan.
- Free custom debit card. You can design your own customized debit card free of charge. You can upload your own photo for the card background. You can also choose to have a photo of yourself in the upper-righthand corner for added security.
- Free savings account. You can open a Relationship Savings account with any checking account for no extra monthly service fee. This account can be used for overdraft protection.
- Send money with Zelle. Easily send money to anyone with just a U.S. phone number or U.S. email address.
What to Open at M&T Bank
- 12-month or 24-month CD. M&T offers a great rate for their Select Promo CDs of 12-month or 24-month term. The minimum to open is $1,000. This opening deposit cannot be money already on deposit at M&T Bank.
- EZChoice Checking. This is M&T's free checking option. It has no monthly service fee or minimum balance requirements.
How to Avoid M&T Bank Checking Account Fees

- MyChoice Plus Checking. The $14.95 monthly fee can be waived if you: maintain an average daily balance of at least $2,500, OR have combined direct deposits of at least $1,500 per statement cycle.
If you're in certain New Jersey regions, the requirements to waive the fee are lower. You must maintain a $500 average daily balance, or have $500 in direct deposits per cycle, or else the monthly service fee is $4.95.
- MyChoice Premium Checking. The $24.95 monthly fee can be waived if you: maintain an average daily balance of at least $7,500, OR have a combined balance of at least $25,000 in deposit accounts, loans and home equity outstanding balances, and investments and business deposit accounts.
- Basic Banking. This account has no minimum balance requirements, but the $3 monthly fee cannot be waived.
