If you have a BMO Bank account, you only need to be aware of one routing number. This number is 071025661. Read on and learn how to use it.

What Is a Routing Number?

A routing number is essentially a form of ID for a financial institution. It's a 9-digit number that will serve as the bank's identification document for a transfer.

The routing number for BMO Bank is 071025661.

Some banks might have multiple numbers and some, like BMO, have one. This number can also depend on the state in which you opened your account.

Apart from states, a routing number can also differ depending on the transfer you want to complete. Many times, the routing number for a wire transfer and one for a direct deposit will be different.

Luckily, the BMO bank's routing number is the same for everyone. It will stay the same regardless of the state where you opened your account or the state you moved to.

Why do you need a routing number?

Your routing number is going to serve as a form of identification for your money. Think of it as your money's address. That way, when you make a transfer, your bank's address is known.

Note that routing numbers are only used for transfers inside the U.S. Outside the U.S., you will need a different code.

Let's get into more detail.

What Is a Routing Number Used for?

You will need a routing number to complete a transaction. This number will help identify the bank from which the money is being transferred or being transferred to.

Whether you need to complete a bill payment, direct deposit, or a tax payment, you will need a routing number. For international transfers, you also need SWIFT and IBAN. But we'll get to that later.

Are all BMO routing numbers the same?
Yes, they are. You can use the same BMO routing number for all your personal transfers, regardless of the state you reside in and what type of domestic transfer you need to complete.

How Do I Find My Bank's Routing Number?

There are a few ways you can go about finding your bank's routing number. You can:

  • Go online
  • Get in touch with your bank
  • Find it on a check
  • Find it on a bank statement

Most of the time, you will be able to find the routing number through a quick Google search. However, some information may be outdated or incorrect for you specifically. Because of this, getting in touch with your bank or locating the routing number on a check is safer.

You can call or email your bank and ask them to provide the routing number for you. This is a surefire way to make sure you have the right routing number.

You can also usually find it on the bottom left corner of your check issued by the bank, including those issued by BMO.

Can Routing Numbers Change?

The routing number of a bank can change over time. Also, banks might have multiple routing numbers, dependent on their size and the number of states they operate in.

Therefore, it's important to check with your bank before you use a routing number. They can provide this number for you. They can also provide any other codes you might need to complete a transfer.

Can banks have multiple routing numbers?
Yes, banks can have multiple routing numbers. These numbers can differ based on the state you opened your account in, as well as what kind of transfer you're trying to complete. For instance, a wire transfer and an ACH transfer can have two completely different routing numbers for the same bank.

Routing Number vs Swift Codes vs IBANs: What's the Difference?

All three of these–routing numbers, swift codes, and IBANs–are crucial to completing an (international) wire transfer. However, they all have different purposes.

SWIFT code
We already touched on what a routing number is used for. A SWIFT code has a similar role. However, it is used for international transfers to identify specific banks and financial institutions.

According to online sources, the SWIFT code for BMO is HATRUS44 or HATRUS44XXX. Before you use this code, check with your bank to make sure you use the correct code for your transfer.

IBAN
An IBAN serves as an account number for international transfers. While a SWIFT code serves as an identifier for the bank, an IBAN serves as an identifier for your account. You can contact your bank to provide this number for you.

Bottom Line

A routing number is used for domestic transfers and as an identifier for your bank. If you chose BMO to be your bank, the routing number is 071025661.

You can find the routing number online, request it from your BMO bank, or find it on a check.

You'll likely need your BMO routing number when dealing with your finances. Keep it handy should you need to make a wire transfer, automatic payment, or direct deposit.

In this case, you can use the same routing number for all domestic (ACH or wire) transfers from your personal bank. For international transfers, you must use SWIFT and IBAN.
