Reasons to Look Elsewhere

  • Huntington Bank is mostly located in the Midwest
They don't offer online bank accounts nationwide like other banks. Which means, if you don't live in one of the states they service, you can't open an account.

  • Steep minimum balance requirements on interest-bearing accounts
For the Huntington Perks or Huntington Platinum Perks Checking accounts, the minimum balances needed to waive monthly service fees are high.

There is a free checking option, but it doesn't earn interest.

  • High balance required to earn higher interest
To earn the "best" interest rates, you'll need a minimum balance of $25,000 in your Huntington Bank Relationship Money Market Account.

If you want to bump the rate up even further, you'll have to link it to a Huntington Perks or Huntington Platinum Perks Checking Account. These accounts require a $5,000 and $25,000 balance, respectively.

How It Compares

Fifth Third:
Also based in Ohio, Fifth Third serves customers in ten states in the South and Southeast.

It offer similar checking and savings programs. But Fifth Third has a hard and fast $1,500 minimum rule to avoid paying hefty maintenance fees.

PNC:
PNC branches are spread throughout 29 states and D.C. and has 60,000 PNC and partner ATMs nationwide.

They offer a unique product called the Virtual Wallet, which combines a primary checking, interest-bearing checking, and savings account. This account helps you earn the most interest on your money as you learn to save.

PNC has hefty monthly maintenance fees and tough requirements to waive the fees, however.

Citizens Bank:
Predominately located in the Northeast, Citizens Bank is good for those looking for a basic checking or savings account.

Their premium accounts offer minimal interest rates. But they offer a motivational savings program to help you get ahead.

Bottom Line

Every consumer has different banking needs. Consider how much you keep in your bank accounts normally to determine which bank offers the best deal.

Don't focus strictly on interest rates, as many more factors come into play. If you pay excessive monthly fees, it can take away from the interest earned.

Choose the bank that offers the right balance between the required balance, monthly fees, and interest rates to make the most out of your finances.
