What Features Come with Hulu + Live TV?

Hulu + Live TV offers these features with their basic package:

Cloud DVR
The basic package comes with 50 hours of cloud DVR storage.

Multiple Screens
You can watch Hulu + Live TV on 2 screens at once. However, you can only stream the service on your mobile phone if you're outside your home network. You can't use streaming devices like the Roku or Fire TV when you're away.

On-Demand
Hulu + Live TV also gives you access to their on-demand library. It has plenty of on-demand TV shows and video, including original Hulu series like Marvel's Runaways and The Handmaid's Tale.

Can You Add Channels?

You can add extra channels with their add-ons. Here's what they have:

Premium Networks
HBO, Cinemax, SHOWTIME, and STARZ

Entertainment Add-Ons
American Heroes Channel, CNBC World, Cooking Channel, Destination America, Discovery Family, Discovery Life, DIY, FYI, Lifetime Movies, and Science

Does Hulu + Live TV Include DVR?

Hulu + Live TV does include a Cloud DVR with 50 hours of storage. However, you can't skip through ads on your recorded shows.

For that, you'll need to get their Enhanced Cloud DVR upgrade. You get 200 hours of storage, and it allows you to skip ads in your recordings.

Does Hulu + Live TV have Ads?

Just like broadcast TV, Hulu's live TV service has ads. With the Enhanced Cloud DVR upgrade, you can record your programs and skip ads during replay. Other than that, there's no way to avoid them.

For on-demand services, it'll depend on the version of Hulu you picked. If you chose regular Hulu (with ads) + Live TV, then you'll still get ads.

You'll have to choose the Hulu (no ads) version + Live TV to get rid of it.

However, bear in mind that even with the no ads Hulu, you'll still get ads with a few shows. Hulu says that these shows have ads due to its streaming rights:

  • Grey's Anatomy
  • Once Upon a Time
  • Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D
  • Scandal
  • New Girl
  • How to Get Away with Murder

Can I Watch on Multiple Devices at the Same Time?

Hulu's Live TV service allows you to stream on up to 2 devices at the same time. You can also stream while you're away from home, but only on your mobile phone.

If you need more streams, they offer an Unlimited Screens upgrade. It lets you watch any number of streams in your home network. You also get to stream on up to 3 mobile phones when you're on the go.

What Equipment Do I Need for Hulu + Live TV?

First, you'll need a high-speed internet connection. Slower speeds affect the video quality and may not even be able to load the stream. You'll need a minimum of 15 Mbps for each streaming device (2 devices = 30 Mbps)

Next, you'll need unlimited data. Streaming HD video can take up between 2 and 3 GB per hour. Without a high enough data cap, you'll run out of data quickly.

You can read more about this in our guide on how to cut the cord!

Finally, you'll need a streaming device like Roku Express, Amazon Fire TV Stick, or Google Chromecast to stream content to your TV.

Other streaming devices will work too. Hulu's latest app, which supports both live TV and on-demand, will work on these devices:

*Note that live TV isn't available on PlayStation, although you can still watch Hulu's on-demand library. You'll have on-demand access to their premium networks too (if you bought the add-on), but not the live TV version).

The classic Hulu app, which only has an on-demand library, will work on these devices:

Does Hulu + Live TV have PBS?

PBS is one of the few channels that has yet to make it on streaming services. You won't find PBS on Hulu + Live TV, or any of the other streaming services like Sling TV, PlayStation Vue, or YouTube TV, for that matter.

That might change in the future. But as of now, PBS is not on Hulu + Live TV.

Bottom Line

Hulu + Live TV offers most of the cable channels you might want, without needing high-tiered plans. They have a decent selection of local channels too.

However, Hulu's Live TV only works with some devices. If you have a PlayStation, for example, you're limited to Hulu's on-demand service.

Also, bear in mind that you can only watch Hulu + Live TV on your phone while traveling. Other devices like Roku and Fire TV won't work when you're not in your home network.

If you don't like complicated packages and prefer a one-plan-solution, Hulu + Live TV is a good choice. Just be sure that the service works with your device.
