Chase Sapphire Preferred also has great travel protections if you're planning on renting a car. We'll explain below.

Auto Benefits

  1. Primary Car Rental Insurance
Perhaps the most useful of all its benefits, Chase Sapphire Preferred offers primary - not secondary - collision and damage insurance for most rental cars when you pay the entire car rental fee in full.

This means you can decline the rental company's expensive collision and damage insurance add-ons.

Better yet, you'll get up to the actual cash value of the car for theft and collision in the U.S. and abroad. Note: this does not include expensive and exotic car models.

  2. Roadside Assistance
If you ever find yourself stuck on the side of the road while traveling, Chase has a a 24-hour hotline offering:

    • Towing up to 5 miles
    • Jumpstarting
    • Tire change (provided you have a spare)
    • Locksmith services
    • Gas fill-ups up to 5 gallons

Note: these services are NOT free.

    Chase's hotline number is 1-800-847-2869.

Purchase Benefits

  1. Purchase Protection
On most purchases with the Chase Sapphire Preferred, you can be reimbursed up to $500 if the eligible item is damaged or stolen within 120 days from purchase.

If the item was stolen, you must file a police report within 48 hours of the theft. And if the item is damaged, the reimbursement will be for the cost of repair or replacement (or up to $500).

  2. Extended warranty
For eligible purchases with a U.S. warranty of 3 years or less, you get an additional one year warranty added when you purchase the item with Chase Sapphire Preferred card.

You also get up to $10,000 per claim, with a maximum $50,000 per account. And make sure you keep the receipts.

Chase Sapphire Preferred Purchase Benefits

Note: Chase Sapphire Preferred no longer offers price protection and return protection.

Previously, price protection allowed you to claim the difference if you bought an item and the price drops within 90 days of purchase. Return protection used to refunded you the money if you wanted to return an item within 90 days of purchase and the store refused to take it back. These benefit were discontinued.

What is Chase Ultimate Rewards?

Chase Ultimate Rewards is one of the best credit card travel programs. There are lots of ways to earn extra points, so racking up more points is even easier.

Can I transfer my Chase Freedom points to Sapphire Preferred?
Yes. The Chase Freedom card is part of the Ultimate Rewards family, so you can combine points. It's a smart idea to do so, as transferring points to Sapphire Preferred will allow you to use them to redeem for travel at higher value.

To combine points from multiple Ultimate Rewards cards, you simply:

  • Log into your Chase account
  • Go to the Ultimate Rewards page
  • Select the card from which you want to transfer your points

Once you're in the dashboard for that card, you'll find the "Combine Points" on the top menu. Just select the card you want to transfer points.

Chase offers you several ways to redeeming your Ultimate Rewards point, too. With the Preferred card, it's even more rewarding since you can transfer to airline and hotel partners for better value.

You can even transfer points to yours spouse or domestic partner IF your accounts are in good standing.

Chase Sapphire Preferred login: The login to your account is right on Chase's home page: chase.com. When you've logged in with your username and password, you'll be able to access all your Chase credit card accounts. You can combine points between Ultimate Rewards cards from there.

How to Redeem Ultimate Rewards Points

One of the best features is that Chase Sapphire Preferred allows you to redeem points for travel for higher value. Here are the redemption options:

  • Book travel with points through Ultimate Rewards at a discount. When you book travel with points through the Chase travel portal, you receive a 20% discount. Each point is worth 1.25 cents (10,000 points = $125).

  • Transfer to travel partners. You can transfer your points 1:1 to a number of airline and hotel partners, including United, Southwest, Jetblue, and Hyatt. You can get maximum value out of your points.

  • Get cash back. You can redeem points for statement credit or direct deposit into your bank account, but only at the rate of 1 cent = 1 point (10,000 points = $100).

  • Exchange for a gift card. For a 1:1 exchange, you can get a gift card from your favorite retailer. Most merchants require that you trade in at least 2,500 points for a $25 gift card.

  • Pay on Amazon. The perk here is easy checkout, but the points are only valued at 0.80 cents each (instead of 1:1).

  • Buy an experience. You can also trade in your points for an experience at a 1:1 exchange with Chase's Exclusive Events, including fine dining, entertainment, and sports. The value depends on how much you value the experience.

Learn the best ways to redeem Ultimate Rewards points.

How much is 60,000 Chase points worth?
With the Chase Sapphire Preferred, this depends on how you redeem it:

  • If you redeem for cash back, it's worth $600
  • If you redeem on the Chase travel portal, it's worth $750 (25% more value)
  • If you transfer to airlines, redemption value varies. You could get 2 round-trip flights from Los Angeles to Hawaii (with British Airways for 50,000 miles), which can be worth $1000+. It can also be worth a round-trip flight to Europe (though some airlines charge fuel surcharge, so you'd need to account for that).

Earn Points Fast With the Chase Shopping Portal

To earn points fast, don't forget about the Chase Shopping Portal.

Chase has a "Shop Through Chase" feature that awards bonus points for shopping at partner merchants. There are over 200 popular stores. Most stores offer 2x-5x points per $1, but some stores go as high as 15x or 20x points. This will allow you to earn bonus points on shopping, that would otherwise be just 1x points.
