Ink Cash vs Ink Preferred

Which Chase Business Credit Card Is Best for Startups?

If your business is new, go with one of the no-annual-fee cards. This way, you can earn rewards even if you have very few expenses.

  • Chase Ink Cash gives you bonus rewards in office supply stores, telecom services, gas, and dining.

  • Chase Ink Unlimited gives you 1.5% cash back on all purchases with no cap.

Both cards have an introductory APR for purchases, which is great for new businesses that don't yet have a steady cash flow. That intro period will come in handy if there's a slow month and you can't make the payment. It's also good if you have some larger purchases to make for your business and need time to pay it off. The regular interest rate is also lower than the Ink Preferred.

Why use a business credit card:

  • Keep your business expenses separated
  • Earn rewards in business categories
  • More purchasing power

Which Chase Business Credit Card Is Best for Contractors?

The two cards offer bonuses in different categories. So this comes down to what your business spends the most on.

  • If you regularly take your clients out to eat: The Ink Cash gives you 2% cash back on the first $25,000 spent in combined purchases at restaurants and gas stations each year.

  • If you spend a lot at office stores: The Ink Cash gives you 5% cash back on the first $25,000 spent in combined purchases at office supply stores and on cellular phone, landline, internet and cable TV services each year.

  • If you spend a lot on shipping or advertising. The Ink Preferred gives you 3x points on the first $150,000 spent in combined purchases on travel, shipping, Internet, cable and phone services, and advertising on social media and search engines each year.

Things to Know About Chase Business Credit Cards

  • Chase business cards have the 5/24 rule. The 5/24 rule states that if you've opened 5 or more cards in the past 24 months, you will not be approved for a new Chase card.

Note: Some business cards don't count towards the 5 card limit, if they don't report to personal credit bureaus. This would include cards from AMEX, Bank of America, Citi, and Wells Fargo. Business cards from Capital One and Discover will count towards 5/24.

  • You need excellent credit. Chase business credit cards usually require excellent credit. This usually means a credit of around 700+.

  • They do not show up on your personal credit report. Chase does not report your business card to consumer credit bureaus, so your personal credit will not be affected.

  • You will need to provide business information. On the application, you will need to provide your business' annual revenue and Tax ID Number or Employer ID Number. Don't worry, even if you're a new business with no revenue, you can still apply. Read: How to Get a Business Credit Card.

  • You will have to sign a personal guarantee. This is a clause that states that you, personally, will repay any business debt. If you stop making payments on the card, Chase can come after you personally to recover the balance owed.

Chase Business Credit Card FAQ

  • Do I have to be a corporation to apply?
No. You can get a business credit card even if you're a freelancer or have a small Etsy shop. Basically, if you do anything for profit, it can be considered a small business. Other examples can be: driving Uber, tutoring math, or running a blog.

  • Can I apply even if I'm not yet earning income?
Yes. You can apply as long as you have a reasonable intention to make a profit. You would just put "0" for the annual business revenue on the application.

  • Do I need great personal credit?
If you do not have any business credit, then banks will look at your personal credit history when deciding whether to approve you for your first business credit card. Chase's business cards do require excellent credit.

  • I have great credit. Why was I denied?
If you have opened over 5 credit cards (even if not from Chase) over the past 2 years, you will not be approved. If you have too many recent inquires on your credit, it could also be reason for denial.

If you were denied, call the reconsideration line at 800-453-9719. Sometimes, you just need to explain your business more and what you plan to do with the card.

If you have other Chase credit cards, Chase may also look at the total credit limit extended to you. They may deny you if you already have too much credit. Sometimes, you can get the denial reversed if you offer to move some credit from another card to the new business card.

  • Does a business credit card affect my personal credit?
Chase does not report your business card activities to consumer credit bureaus. However, if you become delinquent on your business card account, then the consumer credit bureau will be notified and your personal credit will take a hit.

Which Small Business Card?

The right one for you depends on your business' needs and spending habits. Do you want cash back or does your business travel a lot? What kind of expenses does your business have?

Newer businesses may want to start out with one of the no annual fee cashback cards. The Ink Cash is great for those who spend on office supplies, telecom services, dining & gas, while the Ink Unlimited is better for those with no set spending habits.

The Ink Preferred will give you the most value and flexibility when redeeming points for travel. And the Southwest card is great for those who fly to Southwest destinations.
