HOW DOES IPVANISH VPN WORK?

IPVanish VPN offers three subscription plans - per month, per three months, and per year. Naturally, you'll get the most savings with the yearly subscription.

To sign up you'll need a valid email address. You'll also need to pay for the service upfront. IPVanish accepts payment from most major credit cards and PayPal.

After that, the process is quite straightforward. Download and install the app on your device. Login with your account, and connect to the servers of your choice. That's it.

WHY WE LIKE IPVANISH VPN

  • You want a company with a "no-logging" policy
According to IPVanish, it doesn't log anything from its VPN service. They don't collect information on user connection or activity. This is important, since they're operating out of the US - a Five-Eyes country.

The good news is that the US doesn't have any data-retention laws. This allows IPVanish to have a zero-logs policy. Without logs, your information is secure. There's nothing to show, even if IPVanish were to share information.

  • You want a fast VPN service
When it comes to speed, IPVanish performs reasonably well. It's not the fastest VPN out there, but it does hold its own.

  • You want a secure and reliable service
What we like about IPVanish is that they cut out the middleman. They claim that all aspects of their service are handled internally. This includes things like app development and customer support.

They even own all their servers. That way, they have control over the whole process, and can manage their network better. This translates to faster, more reliable speeds for users.

Another advantage of not having a third-party developer - your information is more secure. That way, the only one with access to your information is IPVanish.

  • You like advanced features
For users familiar with VPN, IPVanish offers a lot of options. The apps for Windows and Mac offer features like IP switching, port scrambling, and kill-switch.

Other features include "Block LAN traffic." This stops your device from connecting to open Wi-Fi hotspots unknowingly. You can also enable "stealth mode," which stops ISPs from knowing your VPN use. Some ISPs throttle your speed if they find out that you're using a VPN.

The downside is, all this may be confusing for VPN newbies. However, experienced users will like the advanced settings.

  • You'd like to try it out before subscribing
IPVanish offers a seven-day period for users to try their product. If you cancel within the first week, they'll grant you a full refund.

If there's something wrong with their service after seven days, you might still get a refund. However, this is on a case-by-case basis.

    Pricing Options:

    $10.00/month
    $8.99/month (3-month subscription)
    $6.49/month (12-month subscription)

  • You want a VPN with an extensive network
IPVanish VPN's network is respectable. They have more than 1,000 servers across 60 countries.

What we like about IPVanish is that they're always expanding. They have a server expansion page, where you can vote for the location of their next server. You can even fill in a request form for a location to be added, although the final decision is up to them.

  • You want to bypass the great firewall of China
IPVanish's apps won't work automatically inside China. The government has blocked IPVanish's domains. However, you can still use their service if you manually connect to their IP address.

This does require some tinkering on your part. However, they've provided guides on their website on how to do that. The process is a bit more tedious, but you'll still be able to use their service in China.

  • You want to be able to use P2P file-sharing.
IPVanish allows P2P file sharing. With unlimited data and decent speeds, you can download your files with speed and security.

They've also stated that they won't throttle speeds on P2P networks. They seem to be openly P2P-friendly, so we feel secure with using them for P2P.

File-sharing is perfectly legal as long as you're not sharing copy-written material. Most creative content is copy-written (meaning it really belongs to someone else.) Examples of copy-written material are: Movies, music, photos that you didn't take, games, etc.

  • You want a VPN service you can install on your router
You can install IPVanish VPN directly on your router. They do sell preconfigured routers from their website, which are plug-and-play. They also provide instructions on how to install the app on your router by yourself.

However, be warned - this could damage your router if done incorrectly. Also, not all routers are compatible with VPNs.

Installing the app on your router lets you to protect all devices connected to your home network.

Using a VPN router is safer, since it's always on. You don't have to worry about remembering to connect to a VPN server, since you're protected from the source.

REASONS TO CHOOSE ANOTHER VPN PROVIDER

  • You want to be able to access Netflix
IPVanish can't connect to Netflix. Netflix has blacklisted all IPVanish's servers, and they've given up working around that.

You can still use IPVanish to bypass geo-locks on platforms like Kodi, but Netflix is off-limits. If you want to access Netflix, pick NordVPN or ExpressVPN instead.

  • Located in the US
Since it's located in the US, IPVanish has to abide by its laws. Although there are no data retention laws in the US, it's still part of the Five Eyes network. Things may change in the future, making IPVanish less secure.

For now, we're confident in IPVanish's security, given its zero-logs policy.

OTHER OPTIONS TO CONSIDER

NordVPN
NordVPN is another solid contender when it comes to VPN service. They're located in Panama, which has no data-retention laws. This ensures that they have no logs and your privacy is protected.

They have over 4,000 servers in over 60 countries. You can have up to six connections, and they have strong DNS leak protection. You can also use it with Netflix and P2P networks.

NordVPN accepts payments from PayPal and major credit cards. You can even use Bitcoin if you'd like to keep your identity private.

If you prefer a major provider based outside of the US, NordVPN is a solid choice. We'll explain the main differences between IPVanish and NordVPN below.

CyberGhost
CyberGhost is a VPN provider based out of Romania. Romania has no data retention laws, allowing CyberGhost to keep no logs on users.

They also have more than 1,200 servers spread across almost 60 countries. One thing to note is that they have better-than-average coverage for Africa, a continent most VPN companies ignore.

For those looking to use P2P, CyberGhost supports this feature. They mark which servers you can use for P2P with on the app. CyberGhost also currently works with Netflix, although we can't say for how long.

In terms of customer service, CyberGhost also offers 24/7 live chat and email. If you want to be able to contact support immediately, CyberGhost is there for you.

Bottom Line

© CreditDonkey

IPVanish does have some good points. We like that they have advanced features. Users with VPN experience will appreciate being able to control the finer points of their VPN service.

We also like that they own their own servers and perform all development in-house. This gives them more control over the whole process. Without a third-party involvement, there's a smaller chance for a leak or system failure.

Being able to use P2P is also a plus point. With their speeds and unlimited data, IPVanish is a good choice for P2P.

Still, they miss out on a few key points. Not being able to connect to Netflix may be a deal breaker for some. We understand that it's not their fault. However, a few other VPN providers are still able to connect to Netflix, and users may choose them because of it.

Also, having only a seven-day refund period with no free trial is rather short. We feel it's not long enough for users to decide whether they like the service or not.

IPVanish can be a good choice. They've got extra features which you can control for added security. Their speeds are decent, and they support P2P too. Overall, it's an affordable VPN service with good service and performance.
