  • Cord Cutters
  • Large Households
  • Video Streamers/Uploaders
  • Those Who Work From Home

Can you get Verizon Fios without a contract?

Yes, you can get Verizon Fios standalone internet with no contract. Promotional prices for month 1-12, and increase from month 13-24.

What's the difference between Verizon High-Speed and Fios?

Verizon has two internet services available.

  1. Verizon High Speed Internet
  2. Verizon Fios

Verizon's "High Speed Internet" is actually the slower option. It uses telephone lines to deliver data in a format known as Digital Subscriber Lines (DSL). DSL connections are typically slower than Fios fiber Internet plans (about 0.5 - 15 Mbps).

Though slower, it is availble in more areas than Fios since DSL uses telephone lines. Fios however uses fiber optic cables.

Fiber optic cables give Fios users to speeds of up to 100, 300, and 940 Mbps--greatly outpacing DSL users. However, fiber optic cables aren't as wide spread as telephone cables, limiting access to the few areas mentioned above.

Did You Know? Fiber optic cables are made of reflective materials which transmit light signals. This allows the signals to travel almost instantaneously, without interference from other sources. That's why fiber optic internet is fast!

How much does Fios cost compared to regular cable and DSL?

Prices are highly dependent on current deals, packages, and your specific location.

In general, Fios prices are high compared to other cable and DSL providers. However, in terms of cost-per Mbps, Fios offers the most value. Their slowest internet plans are 1.5 times faster than regular DSL, and they only cost 10-20% more.

Choosing between Fios and other cable/DSL providers is a little bit like deciding between iPhone and Android - with Fios, you're paying a premium for a quality product. With cable/DSL, you have the option of paying less and customizing what's important to you. You won't need the fastest speed for example, if all you'll be doing is surfing the web.

Whichever you choose, bring up competing provider options with your sales rep. Chances are, they'll cut you a bargain to make you a customer!

How can I get the best deal?

There are a few different factors that will impact the price of your Fios package. To get the best deal, you should consider:

Contract vs No-Contract
A contract may have lower per month prices, but you'll have to keep paying for up to 2 years in some cases. No-contract will cost higher per month, but you have the option of cancelling anytime.

Bundle vs Internet-Only
If you like having lots of channels and/or you're a die-hard sports fan, consider a bundle deal. For just a little bit more you can have TV and voice services with your package.

Taxes and Fees
Taxes and fees can add up to a nasty surprise to your monthly bill. Be sure to include that into your cost when considering a Fios plan. Also, be aware of any additional costs like a router leasing fee.

What is Fios's gigabit connection? Do I really need it?

Fios's fastest internet connection is their Gigabit connection. It doesn't quite reach 1 Gbps, but it's close - it has a 940/ 880 Mbps speed. The two numbers refer to its symmetrical connection - 940 Mbps download, and 880 Mbps upload.

Do you really need it? It depends. If you're the only user and you just want to stream videos and/or play video games, then the cheaper 100 or 300 Mbps connection is enough.

However, if you share the internet with many people, and each person streams or games on their own, then you'll need faster speeds. In this case, the Gigabit connection is the better choice.

But even without the Gigabit connection, you can still get decent speeds. Here's a list of Fios's average speeds in different areas.
