Tips and Tricks to Save Money at Lowe's

You may think you already know how to find the best deals at Lowe's (i.e., by trying to restrict your shopping to seasonal sales). But you can find price breaks all year round when you know where to find them. We're hooking you up with many other ways to save anytime you go to this home improvement store.

How to Get the Best Deals at Lowe’s

  • Tell them you’re moving. Lowe’s usually has a 10% off coupon in mover’s packets available at your local post office.

  • Keep your eye on the competition. Most Lowe’s stores also accept competitor coupons from stores like Home Depot and Ace Hardware. And if you find the same item at a competing store for a lower price, Lowe’s will match it and beat the price by 10%.

  • Get a green thumb. Whether you’re an expert gardener or an aspiring one, you could benefit from joining Lowe’s Garden Club. Members get lots of coupons for free plants and discounted gardening supplies.

  • Sign up for a Lowe’s credit card. If you are a frequent Lowe’s shopper, it can pay to sign up for a Lowe’s consumer credit card. Choose your card perk: 5% off your purchases every day with the card, six months special financing on a $299 minimum purchase, or 84 months of special financing. Such credit card deals are beneficial only if you pay careful attention to the terms and conditions and make payments on time.

  • Understand the terms before you leave the store: Lowe’s will help you install appliances, flooring, and countertops, but the store tends to act as a facilitator between you and a local contractor. Be sure you fully understand all the terms of the deal before making your purchase (i.e., will the person sent to your house completely uninstall your old dishwasher and haul it away in addition to installing your new one at no extra cost?). The more questions you ask, the less likely you’ll be stuck with any surprising costs, such as extra delivery charges or having to hire another contractor yourself.

  • Check out the rebate center. At any given moment, Lowe’s offers hundreds of rebates on its products. Checking the online rebate center for current listings before you shop could save you hundreds of dollars.

  • Shop scratch-and-dent items. You can usually find significantly discounted items that may have scratches or dents (because they were on display on the shop floor) or that were returned for whatever reason. Look for items like cut wood scraps, mis-tinted paint, or broken bags of gravel or mulch. And be sure to ask if you can get a deal by taking a display appliance off the store’s hands.

  • Get free shipping. Most online items can be shipped to your local Lowe’s store for free, helping you avoid expensive shipping fees. Store pickup also guarantees Lowe’s price protection, meaning you’ll automatically pay whatever price is lower between Lowes.com and your local store.

  • Use a military discount. Active military members can get 10% off their purchase every day by showing ID at checkout. Veterans get the discount on Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day.

  • Subscribe to emails. Sign up for Lowe’s emails to get a welcome offer of $10 off a $50 purchase, plus exclusive notices of sales and new products.

  • Bundle items. Lowe’s offers free shipping on all purchases of $49 or more.

  • Return in store. Save on return shipping fees by bringing your unwanted online purchases to any Lowe’s location.

When to Shop at Lowe’s

  • Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Sales roll over in the middle of the week, so you can double up on discounts and get the best deals on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

  • Sidewalk sales. At least one weekend every month or so, most Lowe’s locations hold sidewalk sales with clearance items reduced up to 90% off. Sales are usually advertised with signs around the store.

  • Early to mid-May. Lowe’s holds a spring Black Friday sale every May with huge discounts on outdoor materials, grills, and patio furniture.

  • End of seasons. Lowe’s puts seasonal items on serious sale at the end of the season. For example, air conditioners, sprinklers, and gardening supplies go on sale at the end of the summer, and heaters, ice scrapers, and decorations go on sale at the end of winter.

What to Buy at Lowe’s

  • Garden items. Lowe’s has a good variety of plants and gardening supplies, and tends to keep its plants in good shape. Join the Garden Club to get more savings on the already low garden prices.

  • Faucets. Lowe’s has a great selection of faucets that frequently go on sale and have competitive everyday prices.

  • Home décor items. More than most other hardware stores, Lowe’s has an extensive assortment of décor items like window coverings, pillows, and lighting. These items are often better priced than at a non-hardware store and occasionally go on sale.

  • Shelves and organization systems. You’ll find a greater selection of these items than at other hardware stores, and the prices are definitely lower than home décor and organization stores.

What Not to Buy at Lowe’s

  • Paint. Lowe’s tends to not have as good a paint selection as competing stores, and the prices are the same or higher for lower quality brands.

  • Roofing. A larger selection and better prices can be found at most other hardware stores or roofing specialists.

  • Flooring. The flooring at Lowe’s tends to be lower quality and higher priced than products at other stores. Spend a little more money at a flooring store to get a much better product.
