Tips and Tricks to Save Money at Home Depot

When you shop at Home Depot — the mecca for do-it-yourselfers — you're already saving money by taking on a project and not having someone else do it. But you can save even more when you know these tips and tricks.

How to Get the Best Deals at Home Depot

  • Plan your project ahead of time and buy everything at once. Got a major renovation about to start? Will you need many gallons of paint and supplies for all the rooms in your house? For really large projects, you could shave off the total cost by bundling your items and making a giant order at once. Try visiting the Pro Desk if you have an order that will total $2,500 or more. This is where professional contractors get personalized quotes, and everyday consumers can too. You could receive a 5%-10% bulk discount plus the opportunity to negotiate.

  • Get a discount just for moving. You can sign up for a printable 10% off coupon when you change your address with the post office.

  • Shop scratch and dent items. Typically, Home Depot locations have a selection of returned or “scratch and dent” items with marked-down prices. These items might have small deformities, or they just might have been opened and returned. Look for big savings on items such as returned appliances, mis-tinted paints, wood scraps, wilting plants, and more.

  • Look for overstock items. The online overstock section offers 15%-40% discounts on a variety of items that are in good shape — they just have too many of them.

  • Shop the Special Buy of the Day. Every day, Home Depot discounts a handful of related products up to 50% off online. Deals are typically released around midnight PST and only last for one day.

  • Use rebates. Many of the larger products and appliances at Home Depot are eligible for mail-in rebates. Search the rebate section of the Home Depot website before shopping to see a list of current offers, which can save you hundreds of dollars.

  • Pick up in store. Avoid paying shipping fees by picking up your online order at your local Home Depot. Many items can be picked up within two hours of ordering, but others may take a few days.

  • Return in store. Avoid paying return shipping fees by returning online orders in any Home Depot store within 90 days of purchase.

  • Join the Garden Club. Anyone who does any work in their yard could benefit from joining this special club. In between sending you gardening tips, Home Depot will also offer you discounts and occasional coupons for free plants.

  • Scope out the competition. If you find the exact same product with a lower price at a local competitor, Home Depot will match the price and beat it by 10%. And many Home Depot locations will accept coupons from other hardware stores, such as Lowes or Harbor Freight

  • Sign up for emails. Home Depot email subscribers get access to DIY tips and exclusive savings.

  • Follow on social media. Home Depot posts information about sales and new products on its Twitter and Facebook pages.

  • Use a coupon code online. Home Depot typically has a few coupon codes available at any time. These codes tend to be for specific brands or types of products and not for your entire purchase.

  • Show your ID if you’re in the military or education. Military members can get 10% off their purchases every day by showing their ID at checkout. Teachers can have their sales tax waived at most stores.

When to Shop at Home Depot

  • April. Home Depot runs a Spring Black Friday sale through the first half of the month, where almost the entire store is on sale and special items are discounted even more with daily deals.

  • End of seasons. Shop Home Depot at the end of the season for deep discounts on seasonal items, such as snowblowers, heaters, and Christmas decorations at the end of winter and barbeques, siding, and patio furniture at the end of summer.

  • Holidays. Home Depot puts items on sale around most major holidays, but the biggest sales are over the Labor Day and Memorial Day weekends, where big discounts can be found on outdoor furniture, tools, and gardening supplies.

  • During cash back season. If you’re ordering online, check to see if your cash back credit card will give you rewards if you shop at Home Depot through its shopping portal. Or, better yet, check to see if your cash back card is offering a higher amount of cash back for shopping at the store (Discover, for example, has given 5% cash back, on up to $1,500, at home improvement stores for a limited period of time).

What to Buy at Home Depot

  • Behr paint. Home Depot is home to a few exclusive versions of Behr paint, including Behr Premium Plus Ultra. The competitive prices and high quality paint make for a great value.

  • Lawnmowers. Home Depot has lots of top lawnmowers in all price points. There are also highly rated Home Depot-exclusive products that have good prices.

  • Appliances. Home Depot has a large section of dishwashers, washers and dryers, and many others items, all from top brands. These items have low prices, are often on sale, and can generally be combined with a mail-in rebate. You could save even more if you buy a floor model (which may have a ding or two).

  • Countertops. Home Depot has a variety of countertop options at competitive prices, and often offers discounted installation. See if the Pro Desk can help you save even more.

What Not to Buy at Home Depot

  • Kitchen cabinets. The large Home Depot cabinet selection is hit or miss, with many products being low quality for the price.

  • Small pieces and fasteners. Compared to locally owned hardware stores, Home Depot has a much smaller and more expensive selection of detail pieces like screws, nails, and bolts, and makes it harder to find exactly what you are looking for.

  • Cleaning products. Although Home Depot has a decent selection of cleaning products, the prices tend to be higher than other stores.
