Choose this card if you want a traditional reward structure. If you’d like to try a different way – with the added bonus of a low interest APR – check out the Barclaycard Ring MasterCard. This revolutionary credit card’s rewards are based on a profit-sharing program involving input from cardholders. The card’s unique “community” concept make the generosity of the rewards an unknown, but the 8% variable APR is quite a reward in itself if you plan to carry a balance.

$29

If you need to establish or repair your credit history, this card is a great option. The $29 annual fee is on the low end of the secured credit card price range, and your payment history will be reported every month to all three major credit bureaus. That’s good news – the faster you can establish a pattern of good credit behavior, the faster your credit score will be on the mend. You don’t need any credit history to qualify for the card, and there’s no minimum credit score required for approval.

Choose this card if you plan to pay your balance in full each month. But if you think you’ll need to carry over balances, look at the Platinum Select or Platinum Prestige versions of this card. The Select charges a $39 annual fee, and the Prestige’s annual fee is a bit more, at $44. The main difference between the three cards is the minimum variable APR (which gets lower as the annual fee gets higher). The higher annual fee will be worth the cost for the potentially lower interest rate if you don’t plan on paying your bill in full each month since compound interest on balances will add up quickly and could potentially surpass the amount of the differences in the annual fees in a month or two.

Research carefully before selecting a credit card. There’s no point in selecting a card that accumulates airline miles if you don’t often fly, and you don’t want to pay the annual fee for a secured credit card if you can qualify for an unsecured $0 fee card. Make sure you fully understand the positives and negatives of all your options before you make your decision.
