23 Fascinating Facebook Statistics

It's no surprise that Facebook is the king of social media, but these 23 statistics we uncovered are still shocking. #18 will make your jaws drop.

Though it has had some ups and downs during its fabled history, Facebook has solidly established itself as the dominant force in the social media realm. What started as a networking tool for Harvard University students has become a global phenomenon that's changed the way people stay connected.

More than half of all adults spend time on two or more social media sites but among those who only choose one, 79% prefer Facebook. It's become one of the easiest ways to keep in touch with friends and family members, share photos or market your small business on the cheap.

To get a feel for just how successful Facebook is, CreditDonkey has gathered a list of 23 statistics on this social media giant. We've got the lowdown on how many people use Facebook, what they're doing while they're online and how much profit the company sees as a result.

WHO'S USING FACEBOOK?

Part of Facebook's appeal lies in how accessible it is to just about everyone. The people who use it come from all different backgrounds; the sheer number of people who are on Facebook is staggering and the data we found sheds some light on exactly who they are.

1. How many people worldwide use Facebook?
More people use Facebook than any other social network. Through September 2014, there were an estimated 864 million users logging on daily and 1.35 billion people checking in at least once a month.

The typical Facebook user has a fairly broad social network, averaging 338 friends. Almost 40% of users have 100 friends or less while a mere 15% have more than 500.

3. How many people are on Facebook in North America?
Compared to other countries, the U.S. and Canada have fewer daily users overall, with 152 million people combined logging on each day. That number climbs to 206 million in Europe and 228 million in Asia.

Despite its popularity, there at least 3 countries that don't allow access to Facebook: China, Vietnam, and North Korea.

9. Is Facebook as popular among higher earners?
Earning more money makes it less likely that you'll be a frequent Facebook visitor. Approximately 76% of adult Internet users who earn under $50,000 annually spend time on the site versus 69% of those who make $75,000 or more each year.

One of the reasons people like Facebook so much is that you can share whatever is going on in your life in a matter of seconds. While some people are only occasional Facebook users, others are more religious about checking in and keeping friends posted about their latest doings.

10. How many times a day are users checking their account?
New content is posted to Facebook every second. Smartphone users like to stay up to speed; on average, they pop in for an update 14 times a day.

CONCLUSION

Whether you love Facebook or hate it, there's no denying its popularity. While new social networks are still popping up left and right, none of them has been able to duplicate its success. As Facebook moves into its second decade, it remains to be seen if another company will be able to wrangle away its title as the king of social media.
