Sunbasket saves you the trouble of grocery shopping with its handy meal kits. But is it really worth it? Read this Sunbasket review to see how it stacks up.

Sunbasket brings quick, healthy meals to your door at an affordable price.

But are you really getting a good value? And does it cater to your dietary needs?

Before signing up, review the pros and cons of the Sunbasket meal delivery service. Plus, check out which menus they offer and how it compares to other services like Hello Fresh.

What Is Sunbasket?

Founded in 2014, Sunbasket is a meal kit delivery company that focuses on healthy food. The founder, Chef Justine Kelly, strongly believes in the power of eating healthy, organic meals. She created her company to fill the void in meal kit delivery services offering organic food.

Sunbasket offers two options:

  1. Meal Kits, which include all ingredients needed to create a healthy, delicious meal.
  2. "Fresh and Ready" meals, which are already prepared, and all you have to do is heat them up.

They also recently added a large selection of healthy grocery items that you can add to your order. Items include fresh meats, bread, cheese, seafood, and snacks.

Sunbasket takes sustainability seriously, always finding ways to reduce more waste in packaging and serving sizes. They also commit to working with farmers, ranchers, and fishermen who care for their land and animals.

Is Sunbasket any good?
People love Sunbasket for their fresh ingredients and the gourmet recipes they can prepare in their own homes. With pre-measured organic ingredients, Sunbasket makes it easy to look like you slaved in the kitchen for hours, when, in fact, you saved hours just by letting Sunbasket do the work for you.

How Sunbasket Works

Once you sign up for a Sunbasket account (it takes just a few seconds), you'll start customizing your menu. Here's what you can expect:

Choosing Your Meals
You can choose two or more dinners from the 20+ available recipes for the week. Each recipe is available in 2, 3, or 4 serving options (for the standard Meal Kits) or single-serving for the Fresh & Ready meals.

Unlike some other meal kits, you aren't locked into a plan or specific number of servings.

Then, specify your meal plan to suit your dietary needs (more on this below).

When choosing your menu, you can select Chef's Choice, are hand-picked, seasonal meals, or you can narrow your options down based on your family's dietary needs.

For example, if you chose the Carb-Conscious plan, it wouldn't include many kinds of pasta, bread, other carbs, or the Vegetarian Plan wouldn't have any meat.

Upgrades and Customizations
Sunbasket allows you to upgrade certain proteins in your meal plan. For example, if a menu calls for chicken thighs, but your family prefers chicken breasts, you can make the upgrade for a small additional fee.

You can also add meat to a plan that doesn't typically have meat. For example, if you order the Vegetarian Plan but have one or two family members who prefer meat, you can add it to the plan without making it the main focus.

Meal selections happen weekly unless you specify otherwise, and the items you choose arrive the following week. You choose the day of delivery, and the order arrives on your doorstep in a cold pack complete with cooking or heating instructions.

Additional Food Choices
After choosing your dinner, you can add:

  • Breakfast items, such as sous vide egg bites, yogurt, oatmeal, bread, bars, or juice
  • Lunch items, such as salads, ready-to-eat proteins, pizza, noodle bowls, soups
  • Fresh pasta and pasta sauce
  • Proteins, such as seafood, chicken, beef, lamb, pork sausage, and plant-based proteins
  • Snacks, such as nuts, crackers, cheese, veggies, dips, bars, and sweet treats

Note on substitutions: Sunbasket will substitute ingredients if something required isn't available at the time of packaging your meal kit. This includes fresh protein and produce. However, they are great about refunding a portion of your fee if you find the ingredient quality isn't up to your standards.

What Are the Meals Like?

Sunbasket meals are healthy and satisfying. However, they aren't going to compete with the richness offered by comfort food delivery kits like Dinnerly or Blue Apron.

Meal Kits
You'll get unique recipes or a healthy spin on traditional recipes with primarily organic foods. You may come across a recipe or two that you may not consider "healthy," but rarely will you find anything greasy or rich like homemade macaroni and cheese or steak and potatoes, for example.

The meals are fresh, light, and overall healthy, allowing families to meet their dietary needs and take care of their body inside and out.

If you want to see the meal options before signing up for an account, click on "Menu," and you can preview the recipes members have to select from that week. You can even filter the results based on the dietary restrictions your family has.

For example, this week, I selected a dairy-free menu, and a few of the options it provided include:

  • Chicken cacciatore with spaghetti
  • Mojo pork tacos with pickled onions and salsa verde
  • Asian rice noodle bowls with sesame dressing and soft-cooked eggs

If you want more details about each meal, click on "View More" to see the details of each recipe.

Fresh & Ready Meals
If your family relies on quick, easy meals, you may love the Fresh & Ready options that go from box to table in as little as 3 minutes.

The meals arrive fully prepared - all you have to do is heat them. Sunbasket usually offers a handful of Fresh & Ready meals each week, and like the meal delivery kit, the options vary weekly.

Are Sunbasket meals already cooked?
Sunbasket offers two types of meals that they call "Easy" and "Easier." The "Easier" meals are prepared, and all you have to do is heat them. Many meals are ready to put on the table in as little as 6 minutes.

Sunbasket does a great job covering most dietary needs and restrictions. You can choose the Chef's Choice, which is a seasonal favorite selected from Sunbasket chefs, or from other dietary menus, including:

  • Gluten-free - Delicious organic meals without the gluten
  • Vegetarian - Dinners filled with organic and fresh vegetables
  • Carb-Conscious - Focuses on high-quality proteins and includes fewer carbs
  • Diabetes-Friendly - Meals that focus on keeping people with diabetes healthy
  • Paleo - A greater focus on meats and cheeses and less on carbs
  • Lean & Clean - An organic and clean dinner for the health-conscious
  • Mediterranean - An array of lean meats and whole grains
  • Pescatarian - A mixture of healthy seafood and delicious vegetables
  • Fresh & Ready - Meals you just heat and eat, no prep required

Cooking Sunbasket Meals

Sunbasket makes it easy to prepare the meal kit delivery food. Each package comes with a recipe booklet covering all the recipes for that week, even the food you didn't order.

Each recipe is broken down into simple steps so anyone can follow along, which is great for beginner cooks. The recipes are detailed, and the instructions also include any special equipment you may need to prepare the meal.

Families love the "Kids Can" section of the recipe, which breaks down pieces of the recipe kids can do so you can involve the entire family.

Some people do have trouble with the cooking times, so always pay attention to what you're cooking and adjust accordingly if your stove or oven cooks faster or slower than what may be recommended in the recipes.

How Much Does Sunbasket Cost per Week?

Sunbasket has different pricing for its Fresh & Ready meals and Meal Kits.

Let's start with the Fresh & Ready meals. The more meals you order per week, the lower the per-serving cost gets.

  • Two meals for two people costs $11.99/serving
  • Three meals for two people costs $9.99/serving
  • Four meals for two people costs $8.99/serving

If you choose the package serving four people, the per-serving price is $8.99 for 2, 3, or 4 meals a week.

If you'd prefer the Meal Kits to prepare the food yourself, the pricing is as follows:

  • Two meals for two people costs $13.99/serving
  • Three meals for two people costs $11.99/serving
  • Four meals for two people costs $10.99/serving

If you choose the package serving four people, the per-serving price is $10.99 for 2, 3, or 4 meals a week.

How to cancel Sunbasket?
To cancel your Sunbasket subscription, click manage meal subscription and follow the prompts. If you don't want to cancel but want to change the delivery frequency or take a break, you can also do that on the cancellation page.

If you want to cancel, though, click "Cancel my Subscription" and walk through the choices they give you. Be prepared to keep answering "cancel my subscription" as they'll try to keep you on board with offers of $20 off or other ways to keep you as a subscriber.

Contact Customer Service

Customer service is available 24/7 through Sunbasket's self-service assistance, or you can speak to a representative from 6 AM to 8 PM PT, seven days a week.

Sunbasket's automated assistance is fairly robust and offers:

  • Answers from Sunbasket customers in their "Ask an Expert" feature
  • Chat with "Sunny B" the bot
  • Get automated order and delivery information in the self-service portal

Sunbasket Consumer Reports
Consumer Reports did an in-depth report on several meal kit delivery services and ranked Sunbasket one of the best to help customers eat a healthy diet. Sunbasket met most of the parameters they felt were important in their evaluation, including 500mg or less of sodium and 8 grams or more of fiber.

Sunbasket Alternatives

Sunbasket wasn't the first meal kit delivery service in their evaluation, and it won't be the last. Many companies are jumping on the scene, but with different offerings. Hello Fresh started it all, and Green Chef is a gourmet, certified organic meal kit delivery service.

Hello Fresh vs Sunbasket
Hello Fresh offers 25 different recipes a week and gives options for special diets, including low-carb, low-calorie, vegetarian, and family-friendly. Like Sunbasket, you choose options for 2 or 4 people and choose from 2, 3, 4, or 5 recipes a week.

Prices start at $7.49 per serving up to $12.49 per serving, and you can skip as many weeks as you want or cancel at any time.

HelloFresh includes all fresh ingredients from the farm, and everything is pre-measured. With your detailed recipe card, you can create gourmet meals at home with Hello Fresh.

Which is better: Hello Fresh vs Sunbasket?
Sunbasket is the better option for anyone with allergies or specific dietary needs as they have a much greater selection, but HelloFresh is more affordable.

Both Hello Fresh and Sunbasket use recycled material for packaging and deliver several times a week, giving you plenty of options for the freshest food deliveries. Sunbasket offers prepared foods for families who need something fast.

Green Chef vs Sunbasket
Both Sunbasket and Green Chef offer fresh, organic foods straight from the farm in perfectly measured quantities to make delicious recipes for your family.

Green Chef focuses on special diets, such as keto, plant-based, and paleo. Green Chef is a certified organic company, and they work closely with farmers to bring you sustainable food options.

Even though Sunbasket uses organic and sustainable ingredients too, Green Chef is more expensive because all ingredients are certified organic. Just like at the grocery store, you pay more for certified organic foods.

Green Chef has fewer menu options than Sunbasket because they focus on its three main categories: keto/paleo, balanced living, and plant-powered.

Is Green Chef any good?
If you follow a specific diet, such as keto or paleo, Green Chef hits it out of the park. It's hard to find a meal kit plan that caters to such specific diets. Green Chef is certified organic too, which puts it in another league than most meal delivery services, although Sunbasket is a good competitor.

Bottom Line: Is Sunbasket Worth It?

If you're looking for healthy organic meals with incredible flavor, similar to what you'd find in a restaurant, Sunbasket is worth it.

You can set the number of meals you want each week and even skip weeks at a time. You don't have to buy a minimum amount, and you can treat your family to incredible and healthy meals.

If you're short on time and want convenience food, Sunbasket's Fresh & Ready option is the perfect alternative to eating out. Within 6 minutes, you can have healthy and delicious food on the table.
