Cash Back Program

The Discover Open Road Student Card gives you cash back on everything you buy. It's also one of our favorite gas credit cards for students.

The best part of Discover Open Road's reward program is the bonus cash back for gas and dining purchases. You earn 2% cash back on your first $250 of purchases at restaurants and gas stations each billing cycle. After reaching that threshold, you get the card’s regular cash back rate on purchases in those categories for the rest of the billing cycle.

This card gives 0.25% cash back on your first $3,000 of regular purchases annually. Every dollar over the $3,000 threshold earns 1% cash back. You can redeem your cash back rewards for gift cards or money. You need to redeem at least $20 to get a gift card and at least $50 to get cash.

Sign-up Bonus

This card also offers a sign-up bonus for new cardholders. The Discover Open Road Student Card has a nine-month 0% APR introductory period. This 0% APR applies to only your purchases, not your balance transfers. Once the introductory period ends, Discover starts charges you interest on your remaining balance.

No Annual Fee

Another great feature of this card is that it does not have an annual fee. This means you can sign up for this card free of charge and begin earning cash back right away. You can use this card as much or as little as you want and you don’t have to worry about earning enough rewards to justify card costs. This makes the card great to have as long as you responsibly pay off your account balance. If you continue to spend within your means, the Discover Open Road Card for Students offers a cash back on all purchases with no strings attached.

Pros

  • Earns cash back on all purchases; you can redeem cash back rewards for gift cards and money
  • Earns double cash back on gas and restaurant purchases
  • No annual fee
  • 9-month 0% introductory purchase APR

Cons

  • Very low cash back rate of 0.25% for the first $3,000 of annual spending
  • You need to earn at least $20 in cash back to redeem a gift card and $50 in cash back to receive cash

Bottom Line

This is a solid rewards card for students looking to start a credit history. The extra rewards on gas and restaurants are a great feature for students on the go. This card does not offer as high a cash back rate as some other cards do, so applicants with better credit histories may be better off with other options.
