Best Times of Year to Mattress Shop

Mattress shopping can be a pain. An expensive one too. With these quick hacks, you can find the best one for you at the right price.
Holiday weekends
- When: Presidents Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Black Friday
- Where: Online, mattress stores, department stores
- How much?: 10-25% off + freebies (pillows, sheets, protector, etc.)
Who doesn't love holidays? You can take a break from work, celebrate history … and get a great deal on a mattress.
Mattress retailers know you'll have extra time to shop during these times. So they'll slash prices to bring you to their store. The biggest sales will be around Labor Day and Black Friday.
Late winter to spring
- When: February to May
- Where: Mattress stores, department stores
- How much?: 20% off or more
Mattress stores go through spring cleaning too. Starting from February to May, retailers need to get rid of their old stock to make room for new mattresses.
You can find some pretty sweet deals during this time. If you're extra thrifty and don't mind a lightly used mattress, ask the salesperson about buying a floor model. This is where you can find huge savings of 50-60%.
Mattress sellers offer discounts in spring to prepare for new mattresses. Once May comes around, you'll most likely find the best deals.
Online sales
- When: Amazon Prime Day, Black Friday/Cyber Monday
- Where: Online sellers
- How much?: 15-30% off + freebies
Online retailers already offer competitive prices. But shop in mid-July for Prime Day or during Black Friday/Cyber Monday and you'll find even better deals. The best part is you won't even have to leave the house.

The mattress you're eyeing could be even cheaper. Check out these smart shopping tips to get the most out of your new bed:
1. Negotiate price—even online
Haggling is expected in the mattress world. Salespeople are ready to make a deal with you, especially if you do your research first. Lots of places offer a price match guarantee, so definitely take advantage of that.
If you're shopping online, you can still ask for a discount. Get in touch with customer service and ask if they can lower the price. Even if they can't, they could still hook you up with free delivery, pillows, or other accessories.
2. Find stores going out of business
When a store closes up shop for good, that's your cue to swoop up the deals. Keep an eye peeled for "going out of business" signs. Many stores need to clear out their inventory quickly, so it's a good time to shop at clearance prices.
3. Take advantage of the trial period
Splurging on a mattress is worth it, but only if it's comfortable and supportive for your body. If sleeping on your new mattress hurts, even after breaking it in, it's not for you!
Most mattress sellers give you 100 nights or more to test your new bed. Take as long as you need to sleep on it. Even though returns can be a hassle sometimes, your long-term health is worth it.
Some retailers go above and beyond. Check out these retailers to test out your mattress for a full 365 days:
- Nectar
- Avocado
- Dreamcloud
Bottom line
There are so many sales and discounts happening throughout the year. You pretty much never have to buy a mattress full price if you're willing to wait a month or two.
But if your mattress is causing back pain and affecting your sleep quality, it's a good idea to upgrade ASAP. You can still shop around for a good mattress even if there are no huge sales happening.
Pay attention to how your body reacts to a new bed. Cheap mattresses can be just as good as expensive ones as long as you get a good night's sleep.
