How This Website Builder Helps You Build a Better Website

Read more about Business

Building a website is like a work of art. Sure, you could grab any drag-and-drop program and create a website, but will it stand out? Squarespace created a program that offers ingenuity, expertise, and customization, whether you operate a blog, or sell products, services, or subscriptions.

Just because you put something online doesn't mean people will see it. You need a better website that makes viewers do more than click on the next search engine listing. Consumers today want websites that speak to them.

With the few seconds, you have to grab a reader's attention; the pressure is on to create a stunning website that turns "window shoppers" into buyers or subscribers. Squarespace helps business owners and bloggers do just that.

Why Choose Squarespace?

Squarespace offers an all-in-one system. Whether you sell products, digital content, subscriptions, services, or collect donations, Squarespace offers a template and commerce platform that works with your business.

You don't have to hire a developer or know one bit of code. You choose your template, add your features, and publish your website for the world to see. You can buy your domain name right from Squarespace or transfer over your existing domain name. Squarespace also offers SEO tools, including an email campaign making it possible to run your entire blog or business from one platform.

Once you log into Squarespace, you choose a template and start customizing it to your liking. Squarespace is a little more complicated than traditional drag-and-drop websites, though. You customize it by section—receiving appropriate customization options when you click on each area. It takes a little getting used to, but it offers superior results once you complete the process.

A few of the features they offer include:

  • List an unlimited number of products

  • Robust product display options, including video and zoom capabilities

  • Shipping calculators

  • Scheduling appointments

  • Collect customer information for marketing

  • Add maps to help customers find you

  • Set up subscription options

  • Sell eBooks or music digitally

  • Offer free digital downloads

  • Sell printable gift cards

  • Collect donations

In fact, Squarespace built its website using Squarespace—they are their own customer. Squarespace offers the products and services they want for their own website, giving you a more intuitive product with features you need.

What You See Is What You Get With Squarespace
Many people love the WYSIWG feature. As you customize your website, you'll see the changes right away. A few competitor programs make you preview the website before you can see how the changes you made affect the website. Waiting until you preview the changes can lead to frustration and overwhelm. Squarespace helps cut down on this stress.

Template Options

Squarespace offers around 60 templates, each created for specific reasons. Clicking on their template gallery, you'll see the most common uses for each template. For example, they offer templates specifically for photographers or image-heavy blogs, as well as e-commerce sites, fundraising websites, restaurants, events, weddings, and even personal blogs.

You can switch templates at any time, including after designing your website or after going live. You won't lose any content—everything transfers over to the new template. Keep in mind, though, that most templates require a little tweaking because no two templates are the same. Of course, it's better than starting from scratch.

Connected Commerce

Setting up a website for a store or service requires commerce capabilities. Squarespace recognizes this need and offers commerce integrations including:

  • Built-in tax calculators
  • Discount and promotions tools
  • Abandoned cart options (converting them into a sale

You can accept credit card payments on your Squarespace website with a connected Stripe or PayPal Business account. With Stripe, you can collect debit, credit card, and Apple Pay payment methods. With PayPal Business, you can accept PayPal and Venmo payments right on your website. You can use both services at the same time on your website.

Subscription Options

If you sell products or services on a subscription basis, Squarespace offers the ability to charge customers on a recurring basis according to the chosen subscription. You can set the subscription up to have a finite number of recurring charges or make it ongoing until the customer cancels it.

Abandoned Cart Features

If a customer adds a product to his or her cart, but doesn't complete the checkout process, Squarespace offers an Abandoned Cart feature. Registered customers (those who signed up for an account) will receive an email within 24 hours after adding a product to the cart, but not checking out.

Customers who don't have an account, but enter his or her email at checkout, have at least one product in his or her cart, and don't complete the checkout process also receive an email.

You can customize the email to match your branding with customized headers, footers, subject line, and content. The email also includes a button that takes the customer straight to the cart should they convert to a paying customer.

The Squarespace History

The founder of Squarespace, Anthony Casalena, started Squarespace in his dorm room at the University of Maryland in 2003. He was tired of the lack of options for seamless web design that brought together content creation, design, analytics, and web hosting. He took advantage of the lack of products serving this need and created Squarespace.

Squarespace officially launched in 2004 and by 2005, had 478 paying customers. Since then, Squarespace has had multiple upgrades, including mobile optimization. Today Squarespace has millions of customers, 960 employees, has locations in New York City, Portland, and Dublin, and offers businesses a way to build a better website.

Bottom Line

Squarespace believes in simplicity and customization. They offer a robust, yet simple program helping bloggers, business owners, and charities create dynamic websites that encourage action. With dynamic photographs and visuals as well as excellent SEO tools, Squarespace can help you create a website that attracts your target audience and encourages them to become a customer.
