If you want a Discover card but aren't sure what to get, here's the guide to help.

If you don't have time to go over the finer points and decide which Discover card is right for you, CreditDonkey is here to help. We've compared each of the popular cards Discover currently offers and reviewed them based on their rewards structure, APR, and fees to help you choose the one that's the right fit for your spending style.

Pricing information including interest rates, rewards, benefits and fees were obtained on April 3, 2017 from published websites and are believed to be accurate, but not guaranteed.

CASH BACK AND BALANCE TRANSFER CARDS

If you like earning cold hard cash with your rewards card or you want to transfer an existing balance to save money on interest, Discover has two options that are right up your alley. The Discover It and the Discover It Chrome cards both offer cash back on purchases, along with a promotional rate on balance transfers for new customers. We've broken down the cards in more detail so you can see how they differ.

Discover It

Intro APR for PurchasesIntro APR for Balance TransferRegular APRAnnual Fee

0% for 14 months

Disclaimer: The information for the Discover it® - Cashback Match™ has been collected independently by CreditDonkey. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

  • Rewards structure: 5% cash back on up to $1,500 worth of purchases in categories that change each quarter; unlimited 1% cash back on everything else.
  • Introductory APR: 0% on purchases and balance transfers for 14 months. After that, a 13.49% - 24.49% Variable APR.
  • Fees: No foreign transaction fee or annual fee, no late fee the first time you miss a payment date, and no overlimit fees.

Why we like it: Aside from the lack of annual fees and the 5% cash back bonus on rotating categories, the Discover It card offers plenty of other features for card members, including free access to your FICO score each month and the Freeze It security measure, which allows you to turn your card on or off whenever you like. You can redeem your cash back at any time, in any amount, and you can use it instantly at the Amazon checkout.

Plus, as a promotional offer for new cardmembers only, Discover It will match all the cash back you've earned at the end of your first year, automatically.

The downsides: You only get 14 months of 0% intro APR on purchases -- so if you end up carrying a balance beyond that point, it's going to cost you more to pay for the things you buy with the card. You also have to sign up for the bonus cash back categories each quarter; otherwise, you’ll be getting just 1% on all your purchases and you won’t get 5% on qualifying purchases.

Who should use it: The Discover It card is a great choice if you're seeking cash back or you carry high interest debt on other cards that you want to consolidate.

For keeping spending simple: Discover It Chrome

Intro APR for PurchasesIntro APR for Balance TransferRegular APRAnnual Fee

13.49% - 24.49% Variable

  • Rewards structure: 2% cash back on up to $1,000 in combined purchases at gas stations and restaurants each quarter; unlimited 1% cash back on everything else.
  • Introductory APR: 0% on balance transfers and purchases for 14 months. Then a 13.49% - 24.49% Variable APR.
  • Fees: No foreign transaction fee or annual fee, no late fee the first time you miss a payment due date, and no overlimit fees.

Why we like it: Like the original Discover It card, the Chrome card doesn't charge a bunch of annoying fees and you get similar benefits, including free FICO score access and the Freeze It feature.

But that's not all. As a promotional offer for new cardmembers only, Discover It Chrome will match all the cash back you've earned at the end of your first year.

The downsides: In terms of tapping into the higher rewards tier, you won't be able to earn as much cash back with the Chrome card. The most you could earn at the 2% rate for restaurant and gas purchases tops out at $20 per quarter, compared to the $75 you could get with the Discover It card for spending the maximum amount on bonus categories.

Who should use it: If you don't want the added hassle of keeping up with rotating categories throughout the year, the Chrome card lets you earn a decent amount of cash back without complications.

IF YOU PREFER TO EARN MILES INSTEAD

Discover also offers its own travel rewards card for spenders who are looking to save big on flights or other travel expenses. If you'd rather get miles for each purchase instead of cash, the Discover It Miles card is our number one pick.

Travel with Discover It Miles

Intro APR for PurchasesIntro APR for Balance TransferRegular APRAnnual Fee

Disclaimer: The information for the Discover it® Miles has been collected independently by CreditDonkey. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

  • Rewards structure: Earn 1.5 unlimited miles on every dollar you spend.
  • Introductory APR: 0% on purchases for 14 months. Then a 13.49% - 24.49% Variable APR.
  • Fees: No foreign transaction fee or annual fee, no late fee the first time you miss a payment due date, and no overlimit fees.

Why we like it: The Discover It Miles card is pretty straightforward as far as travel rewards cards go. You get 1.5 miles on every purchase, and every 100 miles you earn is worth $1 when you're redeeming them for travel rewards. As a promotion, at the end of your first year, Discover It Miles gives you a bonus by doubling all the miles you've earned up to that point. You'll also get an automatic statement credit of up to $30 for any in-flight Wi-Fi fees you incur.

The downsides: Unlike some other travel rewards cards that are floating around, you won't get a big sign-on bonus when you open a Discover It Miles account.

Who should use it: If you want to earn travel rewards everywhere you go, without worrying about blackout dates or restrictions, Discover It Miles gives you the flexibility you're looking for. As an added plus, you can always convert your miles to cash back if you're not planning on taking a trip any time soon.

CARDS FOR STUDENTS

Establishing credit while you're still in college is a must if you want to buy a car or get a mortgage at some point down the line. Discover offers 2 different student cards, both include free FICO credit score access and the Freeze It security tool.

Earn Cash Back: Discover It for Students

Intro APR for PurchasesIntro APR for Balance TransferRegular APRAnnual Fee
0% for 6 months
10.99% for 6 months

Disclaimer: The information for the Discover it® for Students has been collected independently by CreditDonkey. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

  • Rewards structure: 5% cash back on up to $1,500 worth of purchases in categories that change each quarter; unlimited 1% cash back on everything else
  • Introductory APR: 0% on purchases for the first 6 months. Then a 14.49% - 23.49% Variable APR.
  • Fees: No foreign transaction fee or annual fee, no late fee the first time you miss a payment due date, and no overlimit fees

Why we like it: The student version of the Discover It card mirrors the regular version in terms of how much cash back you can earn and what the spending categories are each quarter. The lack of an annual fee is great for students who are living on a budget, and being able to access your FICO credit score each month can come in handy if you're working on establishing a positive credit history.

Plus, as a promotional offer for new cardmembers, Discover It for Students will match all the cash back you've earned at the end of your first year, automatically.

The downsides: You have to remember to sign up for the bonus each quarter, and if you're a student with a busy schedule — that's something that's easy to forget about.

Who should use it: The Discover It Card for Students is a good choice for younger credit users who want to earn cash back on their purchases and the added incentive of being able to get 5% back on certain purchases.

Gas and Restaurants: Discover It Chrome for Students

Intro APR for PurchasesIntro APR for Balance TransferRegular APRAnnual Fee

  • Rewards structure: 2% cash back on up to $1,000 in combined purchases at gas stations and restaurants each quarter; unlimited 1% cash back on everything else
  • Introductory APR: 0% on purchases for the first 6 months; 10.99% on balance transfers for the first 6 months; Then a 14.49% - 23.49% Variable APR.
  • Fees: No foreign transaction fee or annual fee, no late fee the first time you miss a payment due date

Why we like it: The Discover it Chrome student card targets the cashback bonuses in categories that young adults are most likely to spend the most in — dining out and gas. You get a 0% promotional rate on purchases for 6 months, which gives you enough time to try the card out and make sure it's a keeper.

It gets better. Discover It Chrome for Students has a promotional offer for new cardmembers to match all the cash back you've earned at the end of your first year, automatically.

The downsides: If you need to transfer a balance, this isn't the right card to do it with. The promotional rate is 10.99% and you only get 6 months to enjoy it before it potentially jumps to a higher APR. You are probably better off with a card that has a 0% balance transfer rate.

Who should use it: We recommend the Discover It Chrome card for students who want to be able to earn cash rewards on the things they purchase on a day-to-day basis.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Ultimately, which Discover card you choose comes down what kind of rewards you want to earn, how much time you’re willing to spend to track them, and what kind of purchases you're most likely to charge.
