Delta Business Credit Card

Let’s weigh the benefits and disadvantages of the card so you can determine if it’s right for you.

Business owners who want to save on air travel with Delta should check out the Gold Delta SkyMiles Business Credit Card.

The card combines benefits – like a limited time 50,000 mile bonus offer – with American Express customer service.

Below, I'll outline the features of this card, so you can decide whether the $95 annual fee is a good investment for your business.

Reasons to Get the Card

  1. Delta is your airline of choice.
There’s no question that if you’re loyal to an airline, you should consider taking advantage of its cards, and the Gold Delta SkyMiles Business credit card is no exception.

By earning 2 miles per dollar you spend on direct Delta purchases (for airline tickets, etc.), or 1 mile for every eligible dollar you spend elsewhere, your Delta airline miles rewards can add up significantly. You can then use those earned miles for award tickets and upgrades.

And if you usually make in-flight purchases (such as buying a sandwich in-flight), you’ll get an extra 20% off those purchases when you use the card (savings in the form of a statement credit).

  2. You like the idea of 50,000 bonus miles.
That’s a lot of bonus miles just for spending $2,000 within the first three months on your new card. (Limited Time Offer)

Plus, you can earn an additional 10,000 bonus miles after you make an additional $1,000 in purchases within your first 6 months. Offer expires on 11/8/2017.

You can make the bonus miles go far. One-way award tickets within and between the continental U.S., Alaska and Canada start at 10,000 miles (plus taxes and fees).

The bonus mile offer makes this an useful business airline credit card, especially for business travelers near Delta hubs.

  3. Your first checked bag is free.
Checked-bag fees can be costly. But with the Gold Delta SkyMiles card, your first bag flies free (that is not overweight and not oversize), and on a round-trip, that’s a $50 savings. Even if you’re only hauling around a carry-on, you might consider checking it anyway since your first checked baggage fee will be waived.

This benefit applies to up to eight additional travelers on your reservation, so you can save money for a large group of employees.

  4. Being treated well when you travel matters to you.
Flying can be nerve wracking for some people – even frequent business travelers.

That’s evident by the rush of people lining up to board as soon as the announcement is made. You can alleviate some of that anxiety when you book your Delta flight with a Gold Delta SkyMiles Business Credit Card, because you’ll get priority boarding. You’re more likely to find room to store your carry-on in the overhead compartment and be comfortable in your seat before the majority of passengers without priority boarding status have handed their boarding pass to the attendant.

  5. You can’t always pay your balance off in full each month.
Sometimes your business will need to get through a downtime, which is why having the option to carry a balance can be nice (versus a charge card where you always have to pay off what you owe). Of course, you’ll be charged interest, but at least you can make payments over time, if your business gets short on cash.

  6. $0 intro annual fee for the first year.
Many business travel credit cards charge annual fees for the rewards and miles you’ll get in return, so it’s not unusual that the Gold Delta SkyMiles Business credit card does the same. However, you’ll get an introductory $0 annual fee for the first year – then you’ll pay $95 thereafter.

  7. You love a gift — especially an attainable one.
In addition to the bonus miles offer, you can get $50 knocked off your bill in the form of a statement credit if you use your new card for a Delta purchase – including tickets and in-flight entertainment – within your first 3 months of ownership.

  8. You travel overseas.
If you’ve used a credit card in another country, you know how those foreign transaction fees (which average 3% of the amount you charge) can really add up.

With the Gold Delta SkyMiles Business credit card, there are no foreign transaction fees. That’s a significant savings if you pull out the plastic often in another country – even Canada and Mexico.

  9. Pay with miles
Pay with Miles is an exclusive benefit for SkyMiles members with certain American Express Delta credit cards including the Gold Delta SkyMiles Business Credit Card. Once you have collected enough miles, you can redeem them for a discount on Delta airfare. You usually get $100 off airfare for every 10,000 redeemed points. Visit Delta for more information including eligibility and restrictions.

5 REASONS TO CONSIDER ANOTHER CARD

  • You rarely fly Delta.
If you’re loyal to another airline or Delta doesn’t fly to the places you frequent (or it’s a costlier airline), you can find other airline rewards cards out there that will work better for you.

Keep in mind, though, that if you’re a business traveler who often drives to your destinations (perhaps your work keeps you in-state), but you still need to stay overnight, you can also redeem your Delta SkyMiles for hotels, car rentals, select gift cards, and other perks.

  • You want a lower APR.
You might do better looking for another card with a lower interest rate if you sometimes need to pay off your business expenses in installments. Even if you have stellar credit, the interest charges can add up quickly if you don’t pay off your balance in full each month.

  • You want to avoid paying an annual fee.
While the annual fee is waived for the first year, you’ll pay it every year thereafter. With some business credit cards offering no annual fees, you have the potential to save some cash with another card. On the flip side, the $95 dollar annual fee for the Amex Gold Delta SkyMiles is lower than some other business cards, including Amex’s own Business Platinum Card, which charges a $450 annual fee.

  • Other business rewards cards programs are out there.
If you like the notion of cash back in addition to travel rewards that don’t limit you to one airline, another business credit card will probably serve you better in the long run.

  • You don’t travel for business.
Plain and simple, if you’re not a small business owner who travels, there’s really no reason to get this card. Consider a cash back credit card instead.

How it Compares

If you don't only fly Delta:
We understand you want an airline credit card, so why would we mention a hotel credit card?

With the AMEX Starwood business credit card, you can transfer Starwood (SPG) points to airlines, including Delta and American Airlines. For every 20,000 SPG points you transfer at a time, SPG will add 5,000 bonus points. That is the equivalent of earning 1.25 miles on your purchases when you transfer SPG hotel points to airline miles.

But you do lose the Delta airline-specific perks, such as priority boarding and the ability to check your first bag for free.
