Tips and Tricks to Save Money at Toys R Us

The variety is what continues to attract shoppers to Toys R Us, which has more floor space to devote to toys, games, and activities than the big-box stores that have competed for its business. What goes against it is the fact that you don't always know if you're getting the best price for the latest doll or game for your kid.

Now you will—if you follow our guide for shopping smartly at this popular toy retailer.

How to Get the Best Deals at Toys R Us

  • Trade in old items. Multiple times throughout the year, Toys R Us provides the opportunity to trade in old baby and kids items, like car seats. When you bring in an old item (it doesn’t even have to be yours—check in with your neighbors to see if they have gear they’re trying to offload), you generally get a coupon for 25%-30% off your next purchase.

  • Join Geoffrey’s Birthday Club. Sign your child up for the free birthday club and they will get a coupon and small freebies around their birthday.

  • Shop “Today’s Deal.” ToysRUs.com puts multiple items on special for a day. Most discounts average 20% off, but the quantity is limited and items can sell out quickly.

  • Price match. Toys R Us offers a price match guarantee for in-store purchases. If you find a lower price on an identical item at the time of purchase or within seven days, Toys R Us will give you the lower price. Toys R Us matches identical items from local stores and major online retailers as long as you bring in the competitor’s print ad or show the lower price on your smartphone.

  • Sign up for Rewards R Us. Join the free rewards club to earn one point for every dollar you spend at Toys R Us in store or online. Every 125 points you earn can be traded in for a $5 rewards certificate.

  • Get an R Us credit card. Frequent Toys R Us shoppers can benefit from an R Us credit card; cardholders can choose an offer of 15% off or six months of special financing. If you choose the latter, pay careful attention to the interest rates you’ll be getting and your payment due dates; retailer credit offers tend to charge higher interest than you’d get with a general-use credit card. Cardholders also earn bonus rewards points, including one point for every $4 spent with the card at other stores, and 10% off in-store purchases made on Thursdays.

  • Use a coupon. Toys R Us provides coupons through its website, email, and printed mailers. These coupons typically offer a percentage or dollar amount off your total purchase or only apply to a certain brand or type of toy. Toys R Us also accepts many Babies R Us and manufacturer coupons. Unless stated on the coupon that it can’t be combined, you can generally stack a store coupon with a manufacturer coupon.

  • Attend in-store events. Toys R Us occasionally has special events, typically around a holiday or new product release. In-store events usually feature giveaways and exclusive discounts. Check your local store or social media for a calendar of upcoming events.

  • Bundle items. Shipping is free on all orders of $49 or more; otherwise, it is a flat rate of $5.99. Save money by combining multiple items into the same order to avoid paying multiple shipping fees. You can also join ShopRunner to get free two-day shipping on all orders. ShopRunner costs $79 a year, but it includes free shipping from hundreds of sites.

  • Follow on social media. Follow Toys R Us on Facebook and Twitter to get the latest word on giveaways and promotions.

When to Shop at Toys R Us

  • End of seasons. Toys R Us puts seasonal and holiday items on deep discounts after their designated season is over. Look for discounts on summer items towards the middle of August and sales on winter items around February. Holiday items generally go on sale right after big holidays like Halloween and Christmas.

  • Sundays. Toys R Us weekly ads run Sunday-Saturday, so shopping earlier in the week gives you a bigger selection of sale items.

  • Black Friday and mid-December. Toys R Us sells a large percentage of holiday gifts and famously has some of the best Black Friday deals, with almost the entire store getting deep discounts that day. Prices also dip a few weeks before Christmas, when they reach some of the lowest prices of the year.

What to Buy at Toys R Us

  • Video games. Toys R Us frequently runs sales on its large video game selection, with deals like buy one, get one free or buy one, get one half off.

  • Legos. Toys R Us has an unusually large selection of Legos, which frequently go on sale.

  • Newly licensed materials. Toys R Us sells lots of licensed products and tie-ins to new movies, making it one of the best places to get products for new TV shows and movies. These items are frequently less expensive than similar items at other stores.

  • Bikes. The store has a large selection of bikes for all sizes, the prices tend to be slightly lower than bike shops, and bikes sold at ToysRUs.com come with free shipping.

What Not to Buy at Toys R Us

  • Tablets. Toys R Us has a large selection of educational and entertainment tablets, but the prices are often lower at other places. Tablets are also excluded from most Toys R Us coupons.

  • Clothes. Toys R Us has a small section of clothing, but the prices are cheaper elsewhere and go on sale less frequently than other items in the store.

  • Sporting goods. Although Toys R Us sells equipment for all kinds of sports, the items are generally cheaper when bought from other places.
