Good cash back card for small business owners

Blue Business Cash replaces the discontinued SimplyCash Plus.

  • 0.0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for 12 months, then a variable rate, 14.74%, 17.74%, or 20.74%, based on your creditworthiness and other factors as determined at the time of account opening.

Who This Card Is Best For

  • Businesses that prefer cash back over travel rewards.

Counterpoint: If you occasionally travel for business, check out Blue Business Plus instead. You earn points that can be transferred to airline partners.

  • Businesses with varied spending that don't usually fit with bonus categories on other business cards.

  • New businesses that may need some time to pay off initial purchases.

  • Small businesses that spend less than $50,000 per year (average of $4,167 per month).

Who Should Skip this Card:

  • Businesses that spend abroad, as there is a 2.7% foreign transaction fee. (See Rates & Fees)

  • Business travelers who are more interested in travel rewards.

  • Businesses with heavy spending.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • 2% cash back on all eligible purchases (up to $50,000 per calendar year, then 1%)
  • 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for 12 months. After that, a variable APR, currently 14.74% - 20.74% Variable.
  • No annual fee

Cons:

  • No welcome bonus
  • Cap on the 2% cash-back rewards
  • 2.7% foreign transaction fee

Now, we'll go over each feature in more detail.

Blue Business Cash Main Features

  1. Excellent Reward Rate
The Blue Business Cash's reward structure is as follows:

    • 2% cash back on all purchases up to $50,000 per calendar year

    • 1% cash back after that

Your cash-back rewards are automatically credited to your statement every month. You don't need to take any action to redeem.

However, note that there is no welcome bonus, so there's no upfront reward. But with the excellent cash-back rate and no annual fee, long-term users will find ongoing value.

  2. Spend Beyond Your Limit
This is one of the biggest advantages of AMEX business cards. While you will get a credit limit, you can spend above that limit with no over-limit fees or need to pre-notify. The over-limit part will earn cash-back rewards as well.

This can come in particularly handy when you have to make a larger purchase or deal with unexpected changes. How much you can spend over limit will adjust depending on your use, payment history, credit record, and other factors.

When you spend over your limit, you must pay in full the portion of your balance that is over limit as part of the minimum payment due.

  3. Intro APR
There is a 0% introductory APR on purchases and balance transfers for the first 12 months. After that, the variable rate is 14.74% - 20.74% Variable.

The intro APR is great for new businesses with unsteady cash flow or large initial purchases to make. But the ongoing variable APR is high, so make sure you can pay off your balance before the intro period ends.

However, note that there is a balance transfer fee of $5 or 3% of amount of transfer (whichever is greater) (See Rates & Fees).

Other Benefits

  • Free Employee Cards. Employee cards are at no extra cost. You can track each card's spending and set spending limits.

  • Expense Management Tools. American Express® Business App allows you to track business expenses and organize your receipts. You can also connect to QuickBooks to quickly categorize your expenses.

  • Amex Offers. Get discounts when you use your card at partner brands for shopping, dining, entertainment, travel, and more. This gives you a chance to earn more than the standard cash-back reward rate.

  • Purchase Protection. Covers your eligible item from damage or theft within 90 days of purchase, up to $1,000 per occurrence and $50,000 per calendar year.

  • Extended Warranty. Extend the manufacturer's warranty up to 1 year (for warranties of 5 years or less), up to $10,000 per occurrence and $50,000 per calendar year.

  • Car Rental Insurance. Provides secondary coverage up to $50,000 for collision and theft of most rental cars.

Verdict: Is the Blue Business Cash Good?

Despite the lack of a welcome bonus, the Blue Business Cash is a great option for small businesses that prefer cash-back rewards.

The 2% cash-back rate (on the first $50,000 per year, then 1%) is excellent for a credit card with no annual fee. This reward rate is high compared to other no-annual-fee business cards. And you don't have to worry about bonus categories, so it makes a good choice for almost any type of business.

One of the biggest perks is the ability to spend over your credit limit. This is a huge advantage over other card issuers.

This card is best for businesses that spend less than $50,000 per year. Heavier spenders may find other cards to be more rewarding, even with an annual fee, such as the Capital One® Spark® Cash for Business (see comparison below).

If You Want to Earn Points Instead of Cash Back:
Blue Business Plus has a similar reward structure, but you get Membership Rewards points instead of cash back. You may prefer this if you travel occasionally. Your points can be transferred to airline partners, which can often give your points more value.

This card also has a 2.7% foreign transaction fee, so it's not good for use abroad. But you can still trade in points for flights.

If You Want a Sign-Up Bonus:
Chase Ink Unlimited is good option from Chase for a flat-rate cash-back card. The reward rate is lower at 1.5% cash back on all purchases (with no cap), but there is a bonus offer. This may be a better option if you don't intend to use this as your primary card long term.

Another advantage of going with Chase is that you can join the Ultimate Rewards family of cards. If you eventually get one of the premium Chase cards (like the Ink Business Preferred), your points can be combined and used for travel at higher value.

Businesses with higher spending or overseas travel needs may find other cards to be more lucrative, even if there's an annual fee. Compare all your options to make the best choice. Terms and conditions apply.
