Mastercard for People with Bad Credit: Secured Card

First Progress Secured Credit Card reports to all 3 major credit bureaus to help establish your credit history. No credit history or minimum credit score is required for approval. This secured credit card's variable APR is 20.24%. The credit line is secured by a fully-refundable deposit of $200 - $2,000 submitted with application. Just pay off your balance and receive your deposit back at any time. There is a $29 annual fee.

If you need to establish or repair your credit history, this card is a great option. The $29 annual fee is on the low end of the secured credit card price range, and your payment history will be reported every month to all three major credit bureaus. That's good news - the faster you can establish a pattern of good credit behavior, the faster your credit score will be on the mend.

Choose this card if you plan to pay your balance in full each month. But if you think you'll need to carry over balances, look at the Platinum Select or Platinum Prestige versions of this card. The Select charges a $39 annual fee, and the Prestige's annual fee is a bit more, at $49. The main difference between the three cards is the minimum variable APR (which gets lower as the annual fee gets higher). The higher annual fee will be worth the cost for the potentially lower interest rate if you don't plan on paying your bill in full each month since compound interest on balances will add up quickly and could potentially surpass the amount of the differences in the annual fees in a month or two.

Research carefully before selecting a credit card. There's no point in selecting a card that accumulates airline miles if you don't often fly, and you don't want to pay the annual fee for a secured credit card if you can qualify for an unsecured $0 fee card. Make sure you fully understand the positives and negatives of all your options before you make your decision.
