Allianz, the parent company of Allianz Global Assistance, has been around for more than a century. It's one of the largest companies in the world.

In the 1950s, Allianz partners began to see the need for insurance catering to travelers. During the following decades, with different partners and companies, travel insurance grew to an important line of business for Allianz. They branded their travel insurance service Allianz Global Assistance in 2014.

Who might use Allianz Global Assistance

Allianz offers a variety of plans suitable for most travelers' needs. Families may find Allianz is a great option because children under 17 years of age are covered for free when traveling with parents or grandparents.

Allianz offers coverage terms up to one year. This is in contrast to many other travel insurance companies, which often limit coverage to a maximum of three months. Longer coverage terms are helpful for students studying abroad, backpackers, and long-term business travelers.

What kind of coverage does Allianz offer?

Allianz Global Assistance plans include most benefits considered standard among travel insurance. This may include:

  • Trip cancellation
  • Trip delay
  • Baggage loss/theft
  • Baggage delay
  • Emergency medical
  • Emergency evacuation
  • Repatriation of mortal remains

The variety of plans offered by Allianz fall into two main categories: OneTrip Plans and Annual (or Multi-Trip) Plans.

  • OneTrip Plans
This type of plan is best for a one-time occasion like a spring break vacation, honeymoon, or trip to visit family. OneTrip plans are purchased only for the duration of the trip.

There are several plans available in this category, from very basic coverage for domestic trips, to more comprehensive plans for international travel. Coverage limits, such as medical maximum, baggage reimbursement, and emergency evacuation maximum, vary depending on the plan.

  • Annual Plans (Multi-Trip Plans)
These plans are purchased in one-year increments. During the coverage period, travelers can take multiple trips to the same or different destinations. This sort of plan works well for professionals who travel frequently for for work and those who enjoy multiple trips throughout the year.

Just like OneTrip plans, coverage limits for Annual plans vary depending on the plan level you select.

Other coverages

In addition to their OneTrip and Annual travel plans, Allianz also offers a Medical Evacuation plan and a Rental Car plan.

  • Medical Evacuation
If you're sick or hurt, medical evacuation coverage pays the expenses to get you to a better hospital or transport you back home. Evacuation coverage is already included in Allianz's travel plans, so there's no need to purchase it separately if you're already covered by a OneTrip or Annual plan.

However, if you choose not to buy a travel policy but still want evacuation coverage, the Allianz Med Evac plan is available.

  • Rental Car Collision
Many travelers assume insurance purchased through the rental car provider or their own personal auto insurance is enough to cover them in the event of an accident.

This isn't always the case, especially if you're renting a car overseas. Allianz's Rental Car Collision plan is available to bridge that coverage gap. The plan can be purchased alongside one of the travel insurance policies or as a standalone coverage.

Why we like Allianz

Allianz's travel plans offer the benefits and coverage limits that are considered standard in the travel insurance industry. Their variety of plans appeal to most types of traveler.

When it comes to price, Allianz plans fall in the middle range compared to their competitors. The company also offers some perks, which helps their coverage stand out from the crowd of similarly designed and priced policies.

Here are some other advantages:

  • Kids travel free
Several of Allianz's OneTrip plans cover children under the age of 17 free of charge. This also applies to grandparents traveling with their grandchildren. For a large family, this could mean big savings most companies don't provide.

  • Inclusive of non-traditional families
Most travel insurance companies define a family member as a parent, child, sibling or spouse. This is a strict definition with little room for interpretation. Allianz recognizes that not all families can be defined this way.

The company has expanded its definition of family to include cohabitating partners, step-parents or step-children, extended family including aunts and uncles, and even service animals.

  • Online purchase, modification, and claims
While online policy purchase is standard in the travel insurance industry, Allianz takes it a step further. They offers policy modifications and cancelations through their website.

When it comes to filing a claim, Allianz makes it easy to handle everything online. Policyholders can file claims, submit documents, and check the status of their claim through the online customer portal.

Reasons you might look elsewhere

While Allianz has an excellent track record in the travel insurance industry, there are a few reasons you may want to check out other providers.

  • Too many options
The combination of plans and coverage levels available from Allianz ensures almost every traveler will find a plan to fit their needs. But this wide variety of options may be overwhelming to some shoppers.

  • Confusing third party purchasing
In addition to their own website, Allianz travel coverage is offered through several major booking sites. But it can be difficult to understand what you're actually buying this way. And the complete policy documents are not available to you until after the purchase.

Bottom line

Allianz Global Assistance is a strong company with an established presence in the travel insurance industry.

Their online purchase and claims options are very convenient for customers. Plans and coverage options are vast, with solutions for almost every type of traveler. With flexible coverage terms, Allianz may be especially attractive to long-term travelers.

However, the wide variety of coverage options may be hard for some shoppers to decipher. And purchasing coverage from a third party is not always clear.
