If you’re looking for an all-purpose rewards credit card that offers a mix of travel perks, the Citi ThankYou Premier card deserves a look. This card offers triple reward points for travel, double reward points for dining and entertainment, and a long list of travel protections. Read on to see if the card is worth the $95 annual fee (waived for the first 12 months).

Pros and Cons

  • 3x points for travel
  • 2x points for dining and entertainment
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • $95 annual fee
  • No intro APR

Bottom Line

Good rewards card for people on the go

WHO IS THE PREMIER BEST FOR?

If you’re a high-flying socialite who likes to wine and dine — either by yourself, with a significant other, or a whole group of people — you could benefit greatly from owning the card. Cardholders who stand to benefit the most from this card include:

  • Frequent travelers who would never pass up a promising perk.

  • People who love to eat out or enjoy concerts and live events.

Rewards

Purchases on travel, including airfare, hotels, and gas earn 3 points per dollar. Dining and entertainment purchases earn 2 points per dollar. Other purchases earn 1 point per dollar.

You can redeem your rewards for gift cards, travel rewards, or cash. As an added plus, if you redeem your points through the Citi Travel Center, you'll get more bang for the buck. In fact, points are worth 25% more when redeemed for airfare through Citi's thankyou.com online portal compared to gift cards.

You can earn an unlimited number of points each year, and unlike some rewards credit cards, the points don't expire.

You also have the option of transferring your points to participating travel loyalty programs. Participating travel loyalty programs including Hilton HHonors Worldwide, Asia Miles, EVA Air (Star Alliance), Flying Blue (SkyTeam), Qantas (OneWorld), Qatar Airways (OneWorld), Singapore Airlines (Star Alliance), Thai Airways (Star Alliance) and Virgin Atlantic. While the list of participating airlines does not include major U.S. carriers, they are a part of alliances like OneWorld, SkyTeam, and Star Alliance.

Signup Bonus

The Citi ThankYou Premier card gives you the opportunity to earn 30,000 bonus points. You'll earn 30,000 bonus points if you make $3,000 worth of purchases with the card during your first 3 months as a cardholder. 30,000 points is worth up to $300 in gift cards or as much as $375 in airfare when redeemed through Citi's ThankYou TravelCenter.

How It Compares

It always makes smart money sense to look at a few other credit cards before making your final choice. See how cards that have a similar structure as the Citi ThankYou Premier stack up against this beneficial card for travelers.

Citi ThankYou Premier vs Chase Sapphire Preferred:
While these two credit cards often compete for the same customer, one major area of difference is the airline and hotel transfer partners if you are planning to transfer points to frequent flyer programs.

Chase travel transfer partners include major US airline frequent flyer programs such as Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards, United MileagePlus and US hotel chains such as Hyatt, Marriott and the Ritz-Carlton.

Citi ThankYou Premier vs Citi ThankYou Preferred:
One major difference between the ThankYou Preferred and the ThankYou Premier is the reward structure, which is less generous on the Preferred card. Below is a side-by-side comparison. The less generous rewards are offset by the absence of an annual fee for the Preferred card, however — a $95 annual savings.

If you’re someone who travels frequently and is looking for an all-purpose rewards card to support those adventures, the Citi ThankYou Premier is an option. The $95 fee is a bit on the high side, but its reward structure, lengthy list of travel protections, lack of foreign transaction fees, and discount opportunities on reward redemptions for airfare could make that fee worthwhile for frequent travelers who are diligent about using the card.
