Market research companies want the opinions of the general public. In order to earn those opinions, companies like Survey Junkie offer an incentive. In exchange for your opinion, they reward you with points. You can then turn those points into cash or e-gift cards.

The surveys ask questions similar to what you would answer in an in-person focus group. The difference is you can answer the questions from the comfort of your own home and on your own time. Surveys range in length and the amount they pay you.

Survey Junkie is one of the "legit" survey companies out there. We help you understand how they work and what's in it for you if you sign up with them.

How Survey Junkie Works

Once you sign up for a Survey Junkie account, you complete surveys to earn money. You may receive emails letting you know about a new available survey. You can also log into your Survey Junkie account as often as you wish and view the available surveys.

The Survey Junkie dashboard is very clean and simple to navigate. You will see your available surveys, the points they reward, and the time the survey may take once you log into your account. This way, you can decide which surveys you want to attempt based on your allotted time and/or the reward if you complete one.

As you complete surveys, you earn points. Each point is worth one penny. On the dashboard, you can see the points you've earned over your lifetime as well as your redeemable points.

Once you sign up, you have an opportunity to earn points right away by completing your profile, verifying your email, and taking profile surveys. The more profile surveys you take, the higher your chances become of earning chances to take surveys. Of course, you earn more points too.

Once you reach the 1,000-point threshold, you can redeem your points for:

  • Cash via PayPal: If you provide your PayPal email address, you can redeem your points for cash. Survey Junkie may require phone verification before they will send your money via PayPal, but this only takes a minute or two.

  • Direct Bank Transfer: You can request a bank transfer via Dwolla. This will require you to provide your bank routing number and account number.

  • E-gift cards: Survey Junkie offers access to a variety of e-gift cards in various denominations from popular US retailers. This step may also require a quick phone verification to protect your points/funds.

Never Pay for Surveys: Online hackers/scammers prey on people looking to make extra money. As a rule of thumb, never pay for a survey opportunity. Survey Junkie doesn't charge for their surveys. But don't fall for a scam elsewhere, thinking it will be the same deal as Survey Junkie. If they ask for money, look the other way.

Who Should Use Survey Junkie?

  • People who enjoy having an influence on new products/services. Marketing companies use the information you provide in the surveys to help develop new products and/or services. Sometimes you may be privy to information not yet released to the public. Your opinion, along with many others, can help develop the products into something that you and others would find useful.

  • You have extra time on your hands. The surveys can take anywhere from 5 minutes to 30 minutes (or longer). Sometimes you'll waste your time completing a screener because you don't qualify for the survey. Other times, you will qualify, but will spend half an hour answering the questions. If you need something to do in your downtime while earning a buck or two, taking surveys can be fun.

Redeeming Your Points For Cash: You have to redeem all of your points if you choose cash redemption. You don't get the option to redeem some of your points for cash, leaving the rest unused. If you choose cash redemption, Survey Junkie will redeem all of your points. If you choose gift card redemption, though, you can redeem the points necessary to purchase your desired gift card. You can then leave the rest of the points unused or redeem them in cash.

Reasons We Like Survey Junkie

  • You can cash out your points when you reach $10. Many other survey sites have much higher minimum requirements before you can redeem your points for gifts or cash. If you are able to do a few surveys a month, it should only take 2 or 3 months to hit $10.

  • You can still earn points if you don't qualify for a survey. If you complete the screener for a survey and don't qualify, Survey Junkie will still reward you for your efforts. Many survey companies won't reward those who don't qualify, which can be discouraging.

  • Survey Junkie is honest. They don't lead you on, making you believe you will get rich taking surveys. Instead, they tell you that you will NOT get rich taking surveys. But they also say that with consistent effort, you could make extra cash each month.

  • It only takes an average of 15 minutes to complete surveys. This can be a good way to spend your downtime while earning a little cash. Of course, some surveys will take more or less than 15 minutes, but Survey Junkie claims the average survey takes about 15 minutes.

  • Survey Junkie has surveys available daily. This doesn't mean you'll receive invites to every survey. They pair you up with surveys that match your profile. The more thorough your profile, though, the more opportunities you may receive.

  • Your points won't expire as long as you stay an active member. Survey Junkie considers you an active member as long as you log in and complete one survey every 12 months. This is nice to know if you need to take a break during a busy season (such as the holidays). Your points will still be there for you when you have time to come back.

  • Signing up for a Survey Junkie account is simple. You start by entering your email address, zip code, and country. Next, you enter your date of birth, gender, first/last name, and a password. Just by entering that information, you earn 25 points.

  • Completing your profile is quick and earns you points. The profile consists of 31 questions, but you can get through them in less than 5 minutes. They ask basic questions about your pets, how much of the household grocery shopping you do, whether you own or rent your home, your children and their ages, and questions about your vehicles, to name a few. After completing the profile, you instantly earn another 50 points.

  • You can start earning points right away. After you complete your profile, you may have a few "starter" surveys you can take. Before you click to start a survey, it does tell you the approximate amount of time the survey will take. This can help you decide if you have the time to complete the survey at this time.

  • You have the opportunity to earn money other ways with Survey Junkie. At the top of your dashboard, you'll see a screener that asks you to set up your preferences. Once you start it, Survey Junkie asks if you'd be willing to participate in product releases (receive a free product in exchange for your opinion), phone focus groups, online focus groups, and even in-person focus groups.

If you opt-in to one or more of them, you may increase your earning opportunities as they may pay between $5 and $150.

Reasons You May Want to Skip It

  • You probably won't qualify for every survey opportunity. You may spend a few minutes completing a screener with your demographic information only to find out you don't qualify for the survey. It can be frustrating to spend your time answering questions only to find out you won't earn the points for the survey. Luckily, you do get a "consolation prize" by earning a few points for your time.

  • Survey quotas can fill up fast. You have to check your email often in order to get into surveys. Sometimes even after just a few minutes, the survey quota is full. If you don't have the time to check your email and/or log into Survey Junkie often, you may miss opportunities to complete surveys.

  • You have to provide personal information. If you sign up for Survey Junkie, you will have to provide information regarding your age, birth date, medical conditions, marital status, age of your children, education level, and even some financial information. You can choose to not provide this information, but then you may not qualify for surveys.

How It Compares

  • Swagbucks: Swagbucks offers more than just surveys. They offer the chance to earn money by watching videos, playing games, online shopping, signing up for sponsored offers, and buying gift cards. You do any or all of these processes through the Swagbucks portal. You earn points for each thing you do, which you can then redeem for gift cards.

  • Opinion Outpost: Opinion Outpost offers the same opportunity as Survey Junkie. You complete surveys in exchange for points. You can then redeem those points for cash via PayPal or gift cards to major retailers.

Bottom Line

While you won't be able to pay even your utility bill with your earnings from Survey Junkie, it can be a fun way to provide your opinion. In exchange for helping to shape the future of our products and services, you can earn a little cash. Whether you redeem your points for cash or gift cards, you can see the fruits of your labor for taking the time to answer questions that businesses need answered.
