Sunbasket offers healthy, convenient meals. But is it worth the price? Get a breakdown of the cost and see how it compares.

Planning and making healthy, homecooked meals can eat hours into your day. And that's after a long day at work.

It's no wonder meal kit delivery services have skyrocketed in popularity. They simply take the guesswork out of cooking.

Sunbasket promises delicious, healthy meals delivered to your doorstep. But is it a good value for the quality of food you get? Or is it just overpriced?

Find out how Sunbasket sets itself apart from the competition. And see if it's worth it for you.

How Sunbasket Works

Sunbasket is a meal delivery kit with a focus on fresh, organic ingredients. It offers a range of customizable meal plans. The kits catered to your diet needs, including paleo, gluten-free, and vegetarian options. (We'll cover all the options in detail later on.)

Choosing meals
You can choose the number of servings per meal. Also, the number of meals you want each week. It's easy to edit your preferences, so you can always change your meal plan on an as-needed basis.

Sunbasket automatically chooses meals for you according to your diet preferences. But you can always select different meals or make substitutions if you want. There are also premade, heat-and-eat meals for when you don't feel like cooking.

Grocery shopping
To round off your order, you can also do some grocery shopping through the Market. You can find a ton of different snacks, premade soups, bread, and lots more.

All your items for the week get delivered to your door, safely packed for freshness.

How Much Does Sunbasket Cost?

Sunbasket offers organic and responsibly sourced ingredients. As such, you can expect it to be a bit pricier than the competition.

Sunbasket's price starts at $9.99 per serving for Fresh & Ready meals and $14.49 per serving for Meal kits. There's also a $9.99 shipping fee per box, which is waived for your first delivery.

Keep in mind that the shipping fee is per box, not per shipment. If you choose a plan with more meals per week, you might get your meals in multiple boxes.

The price is pretty high for a meal delivery service.

If you're looking for a convenient and tasty way to feed the whole family, Sunbasket can be worth it. It saves you the time and energy to consistently put healthy meals on the table.

Meal Delivery Options

Sunbasket offers a wide variety of dietary options to choose from. When you choose one, irrelevant dishes will be filtered out for you. You can also add preferences like high protein, low carb, or avoiding certain meats.

Check out the different types of meal plans you can choose:

  • Paleo
  • Vegetarian
  • Lean & Clean
  • Gluten-Free
  • Carb-Conscious
  • Mediterranean
  • Diabetes-Friendly
  • Pescatarian
  • Fresh & Ready

If you're worried about eating the same old meals over again, don't be. Sunbasket offers creative, flavorful meals inspired by different cuisines. It also updates the menu weekly, so you'll never get bored of your food options.

Fresh & Ready meals are slightly different in that they're ready-to-eat, single-serving dishes. All you have to do is heat it up and eat it—no prep or cooking necessary. If you don't get to it right away, you can pop it in the freezer and save it for later.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Good variety of meals to choose from
  • Organic produce and responsibly sourced proteins
  • Caters to different lifestyles/diet needs
  • Offers ready-to-eat meals
  • Pantry staples and groceries for add-ons
  • Very customizable
  • Recyclable/compostable packaging

Cons

  • On the pricier side
  • Not available in AK, HI, MT, ND, and parts of NM
  • Not the best for severe food allergies (packaged in facility that handles allergens)
  • $9.99 shipping per box

Sunbasket vs. HelloFresh

HelloFresh is quite a bit cheaper than Sunbasket. It ranges from $7.99 to $11.99 per serving depending on the number of meals. There are options to upgrade to premium meals, which costs $5 per person. But it's still less than Sunbasket in most cases.

Like Sunbasket, HelloFresh also allows you to select meals based on your diet preferences. Unfortunately, there just aren't as many options as Sunbasket. You can choose from 6 meal plan options:

  • Meat & Veggies
  • Veggies
  • Family Friendly
  • Fit & Wholesome
  • Quick and Easy
  • Pescatarian

If you're looking for niche diets or a ton of customizability, you won't find it with HelloFresh. You will find some organic ingredients, but not to the level that Sunbasket offers.

Finally, HelloFresh is a bit basic with meal options. The meals aren't as creative and exciting as other meal kits. But if you're looking for a service that simply helps streamline dinnertime, this could be a great alternative.

Sunbasket vs. Blue Apron

Blue Apron is one of the most affordable meal kit delivery services. It ranges between $7.99 and $11.99 per serving. Again, the more meals you sign up for, the cheaper it will be. This is much cheaper than Sunbasket, but there are a few drawbacks to Blue Apron.

There are fewer diet options to choose from compared to Sunbasket. You can choose from options like:

  • Chef Favorites
  • Family Friendly
  • Wellness
  • Fast & Easy

These are a lot less specific than the options you get with Sunbasket. If you want a lot of control over your meals, Blue Apron might not be the best choice.

Some ingredients from Blue Apron are organic, but not all. If you want most ingredients to be organic, Sunbasket is a better choice.

There are also some Blue Apron dishes with upgraded ingredients that might cost a little more. But overall, the cost is still much lower than Sunbasket. If you don't want a ton of control over your meals or don't prioritize organic food, Blue Apron is a solid choice.

Bottom Line: Is It Worth It?

To decide if Sunbasket is right for you, think about how much money you currently spend on food. If you frequently eat out, this could be an easy way to start cooking at home.

If you want to eat healthier but can't find the time, Sunbasket could be a great solution. There are cheaper meal kits out there, of course. But Sunbasket is one of the few that consistently offers quality, organic ingredients.

The grocery items you can get through the Market are also a huge plus. If you don't want to go to the grocery store, you can just add items to your Sunbasket order.

Fresh & Ready meals are great for lazy days when you don't want to cook. But you still want something healthier than takeout. And it costs less than a comparable meal you'd get at a restaurant.

All in all, Sunbasket really does offer high quality to back up its price. Whether it's worth it for you depends on how much you're willing to spend to improve your eating habits.
