Survey: Social Media Usage Statistics
Nearly Half Use Social Networking on the Toilet or Drunk
Out of almost 1,200 respondents to a recent CreditDonkey.com survey, 48.6% admitted to engaging in social networking while on the toilet and 47.6% admitted to doing it while drunk. Maybe these high numbers shouldn't surprise us, considering The Urban Dictionary already has a word to describe tweeting while under the influence of alcohol, or drunk tweeting: “Dweet.”

Facebook Wins
Interestingly, those who use social media while taking care of their business are more likely to be checking Facebook than doing it while on Twitter. They are also less likely to do their shopping while on the can. And that’s because Facebook is the most widely used social media site and the one that 79.3% of users feel most “comfortable” with, according to our survey.

Toilet-tweeting and drunk-texting: more of a guy thing
According to our survey results, males are more likely to engage in both toilet tweeting and drunk posting. Having a handy smartphone in your pocket makes this so easy:
- 51.4% of male respondents have used social media while under the influence of alcohol versus 41.4% of female respondents.
- 54.0% of male respondents have used social media while on the toilet versus 40.4% of female respondents.
- 43.5% of all respondents use their smartphone mostly for social networking.
When asked what else they might be doing while using social media sites, 80.8% of respondents said they watch TV at the same time. And the second largest amount, 70.6%, have checked social media sites while traveling. (Who doesn’t know people who are constantly posting vacation pictures, checking into “destinations” via social media, and updating their statuses while still on the vacation?)

To be sure, some social-media users can take their multitasking too far. The dweeting phenomenon has made news headlines when rapper Ervin McKinness died in a car crash last September after tweeting that he was driving 120 mph while drunk. Unfortunately, 13.8% of our respondents acknowledged they use social networking while driving – something we strongly discourage.
CreditDonkey.com surveyed 1,250 Americans, age 18 and over between February 19, 2013 and March 6, 2013 on their use of technology. CreditDonkey.com conducted the survey online using a multiple-choice and short-answer questionnaire.
Editor's Note: 1192 respondents answered the question on "Do you use social networking while…", 1129 respondents answered the question on "Have you used Facebook while…", and 657 respondents answered the question on "Have you used Twitter while…". Respondents were instructed to skip questions on specific social media websites if they did not use the specific social media website.
