The social media scene has exploded over the last decade. The web features hundreds of places for people from all over the world to connect and share ideas; nearly 75% of all Internet users are active on social networking sites, and the usage rate among 18 to 29 year olds hovers around 90%.

There are hundreds of social media sites and apps to choose from and none of them are exactly alike. In an effort to see how they compare to one another, CreditDonkey analyzed statistical data from a variety of sources to see which ones get the most traffic. The result is a list of 23 statistics on social networking that are guaranteed to make your jaw drop.


Facebook started off small but it's grown exponentially over the years into one of the biggest companies in the world. Here's a rundown of just how much activity the site sees on a daily basis.

1. Which social media site is the most popular?
Facebook remains the most popular social network. As of September 2014, the company reported 864 million daily active users and 1.35 billion monthly active users.

2. How much time does Facebook take up?
On average, Facebook users spend about 40 minutes a day posting status updates and browsing their news feed. That’s about 20 hours a month.

3. How often are photos posted?
A staggering number of images show up on Facebook each month. Estimates put the figure at somewhere between 6 and 7 billion, or around 208,000 photos posted every second.

4. How frequently do people update their status?
If you've got something to share with your Facebook friends, you're not alone. Some 293,000 status updates are posted every 60 seconds.


It seems like everybody who's anybody is on Twitter these days, and it's become one of the best ways for people to stay on top of the latest news and current events trends. If you don't have a Twitter account yet, these statistics might convince you that it's time to get one.

5. How many people are on Twitter?
Estimates put the total number of active Twitter users at 284 million each month. Surprisingly, 77% of Twitter accounts belong to users who live outside the U.S.

6. How many tweets are sent out per minute?
Twitter users update more frequently than Facebook users, with an estimated 500 million tweets going out each day. That breaks down to about 347,000 per minute.

7. What's the average number of Twitter followers?
Getting people to follow you on Twitter isn't as easy as you think; the median Twitter account has just one follower. Among users who are active at least once a month, the median number of followers is 61.

8. How many people actively use their account?
While the majority of people on Twitter are actively connecting with others, a staggering 44% of those who have an account have never sent a single tweet.


If you want to share your thoughts anonymously or you're not one for reading lengthy blog posts, Tumblr is the place to be. Tumblr is a microblogging platform that lets you share quotes, links, photos, videos and other media in a streamlined way.

9. How many people are active on Tumblr?
Tumblr's popularity is on the rise, with 420 million active users.

10. How many Tumblr blogs are there?
Starting a blog on Tumblr is pretty easy, but if you're just looking for a few to read, there are nearly 219 million to choose from.

11. How many new accounts are opened daily?
New blogs sprout up on Tumblr all the time; it's estimated that there are 120,000 new accounts created every day.

12. How many posts show up each day?
Tumblr users aren't slackers when it comes to updating. There are roughly 88 million new posts every 24 hours.

13. What's the total number of Tumblr posts?
Since its inception, Tumblr users have racked up an astonishing 101 billion blog posts.


Instagram has made huge strides since its launching in 2010, and it's become one of the top outlets for photo sharing. Acquired by Facebook in 2012, the latest data shows that it's the fastest growing social network in the industry.

14. How many users does Instagram boast?
Plenty of people are sharing their photos on Instagram. The company estimates there are 300 million active users each month.

15. Where are most of them located?
While Instagram has a dedicated following in the U.S., approximately 70% of accounts are registered to people in other countries.

16. How many photos are they sharing each day?
Since its inception, Instagram users have shared some 30 billion photos. On an average day, 70 million new images appear on the site.

17. How often do new "likes" show up?
Instagram has a like feature (the same as Facebook) and it sees a lot of use. An estimated 2.5 billion new likes post each day, which comes out to about 900 billion over the course of a year.


Pinterest, YouTube and Skype are about as different as can be but they all have one thing in common: they rank as some of the most popular social networks out there. If you spend part of your day pinning, watching videos or chatting online, here are some numbers that might intrigue you.

18. How many people are on Pinterest?
Pinterest doesn't publicize how many people are active on the site, but experts put the number somewhere around 40 million users a month.

19. Who uses Pinterest the most?
Women overwhelmingly dominate Pinterest, making up about 80% of registered users compared to just 20% who are male. Women also post 92% of pins on the site.

20. How many people visit YouTube each month?
YouTube sees a lot of traffic, with more than 1 billion users visiting the site each month. Approximately 80% of users are located outside the U.S.

21. How many hours of media do users consume?
YouTube users watch a whopping 6 billion hours worth of videos on the site each month, and 100 hours of new videos are uploaded every minute.

22. How much time do people spend on Skype?
Skype users spend a significant amount of time chatting on the site. As of 2013, it averaged about 2 billion minutes each day, or around 33 million hours.

23. How many Skype calls are made each minute?
Skype users average 88,000 calls every 60 seconds. The average call lasts about 27 minutes.


As you can see, the sheer number of people who rely on social networking to stay connected is staggering. The number of choices is enough to make your head spin, and new companies are testing the waters every day. Regardless of whether you prefer Facebook to Twitter, or you're a diehard Instagram fan, it's impossible to deny the influence that social media has on our everyday lives.
