Bottom Line

Excellent small business rewards card with travel-friendly benefits

In the Chase family of “Ink” business credit cards, the Ink Plus is the muscular middle child. Though it offers more robust rewards than its no-annual-fee “little brother” (the Ink Cash), Ink Plus cardholders have to spend a lot more to take full advantage of its beefier benefits. The Ink Plus may be too rich ($95 annual fee) for the blood of some sole proprietors and micro-businesses, but for companies that routinely incur five figures’ worth of business expenses per year, it’s practically a “must have.”

Unlike the Ink Cash card, the Ink Plus does not offer an introductory 0% APR for 12 months on purchases and balance transfers, and its variable APR (15.24%) is two percentage points higher than the Ink Cash card’s (13.24%). Of course, this is a non-issue for cardholders who pay their entire balance each month.

At first glance, the rewards offered by the Ink Cash and Ink Plus cards appear remarkably similar – and they are. The main advantage of the Ink Plus lies (mostly) with the size of the rewards and the higher spending limits, rather than the type of rewards. For example:

  • While the Ink Cash offers a $200 bonus after you spend $3,000 in 3 months from account opening,
  • the Ink Plus offers a 50,000-point bonus offer after you spend $5,000 in the first 3 months from account opening (worth $625 toward travel when you redeem through Chase Ultimate Rewards).

The Ink Plus also doubles the annual purchase amounts that qualify for 5X points and 2X points – from $25,000 for Ink Cash to $50,000 for Ink Plus.

In addition, Ink plus cardholders can take advantage of a 1:1 point transfer to more than 20 frequent flyer programs.

Other benefits that Ink Plus cardholders will enjoy include: $0 fraud liability protection; purchase protection; auto rental insurance; travel insurance; and rewards that never expire.

Signup Bonus

If you spend $5,000 on your card within the first 3 months from account opening, you receive 50,000 bonus points. These 50,000 extra points are good for $500 in cash back (or $625 toward travel when you redeem through Chase Ultimate Rewards).

For the first year, there is also a $0 introductory annual fee (then $95).

Reward Program

When you make a purchase using the Chase Ink Plus business credit card, you earn reward points. You earn 1 point for every $1 you spend on most purchases. There is no annual limit to the number of points you can earn. In addition, you earn bonus points in certain categories.

You earn 5 points per $1 on the first $50,000 spent in combined purchases at office supply stores and on cellular phone, landline, internet and cable TV services each account anniversary year.

You earn 2 points per $1 on the first $50,000 spent in combined purchases at gas stations and hotel accommodations when purchased directly with the hotel each account anniversary year. If you spend more, you earn the regular 1 point per $1 rate until the next account year.

You can convert your points into a variety of rewards. You can also turn your points into cash. For every 100 points you earn, you get $1 in cash back.

This bonus program applies to your card as well as to any cards held by your employees.

Travel Benefits

The Chase Ink Plus Business Card offers a couple other nice benefits for frequent travelers. This card does not charge foreign transaction fees. If you go outside the country, most credit cards charge an extra 3% fee on your purchases. You don’t have to worry about that with the Chase Ink Plus Card.

In addition, this card lets you move your points into other travel reward programs. You can directly transfer your points to several frequent flier and hotel rewards programs including United, British Airways, Hyatt, and Marriott. You can use your Chase points for the best possible travel deal.

Pros

  • Earns rewards points on all purchases. Earns bonus points on a variety of business and travel expenses.
  • Converts points into travel rewards or cash back. Allows you move your points to other travel reward programs.
  • 50,000 bonus points after you spend $5,000 in 3 months from account opening.

Cons

  • $95 annual fee
  • No introductory APR
  • Limits the bonus rate to the first $50,000 in combined purchases in each rewards tier.

Bottom Line

The Ink Plus Business Card is a superior choice for companies that regularly incur tens of thousands of dollars in business expenses, especially on office supplies, telecom services, business meals and international travel. This is a great business rewards credit card that easily pays for itself. Just the introductory bonus offer is enough to help justify the cost of the annual fee for 5 years. When you combine that with the generous rewards program, the Chase Ink Plus Business Credit Card is a fantastic deal.
