Hostgator cPanel: What You Need to Know

How do you access HostGator's cPanel? Is their customer support any good? Read on to learn how to log in, what to do if you forget your password and more.

Here's everything you need to know about using cPanel with HostGator.

The Basics: What Is Cpanel?

cPanel is a control panel for managing your website. You can do everything from creating email accounts to installing WordPress. It's become a popular tool because of its user-friendly interface.

Users won't need any coding or technical skills—cPanel's functions are simple and straight to the point. HostGator uses cPanel as the default platform for their Shared, Cloud, and Reseller plans.

For Dedicated and VPS plans, HostGator uses WebHost Manager (WHM). It's different from cPanel, although you can create cPanel accounts inside it.

What's the difference between cPanel and WHM?
cPanel is a website control panel. It allows users to edit files, create email addresses, and set up databases for their sites.

Certain hosting accounts, like VPS Hosting or Dedicated Server Hosting, allow for multiple cPanel accounts inside them. The cPanel accounts themselves are managed by a platform called WebHost Manager (WHM).

Reseller accounts have WHM as well, although its functions are limited compared to WHM in the VPS and Dedicated Server plans.

HostGator's Optimized WordPress Hosting is the only hosting package that doesn't have cPanel. Instead, you'll be working exclusively with WordPress.

What Can You Do With Cpanel?

cPanel lets you control all the important technical aspects of your web hosting account. Here's a summary of what you can do with cPanel:

  • Add or remove domain names from your hosting account

  • Install CMS like WordPress or Drupal manually. You can also use extensions like Softaculous

  • Manage your files

  • Create backups for your website and restore backed-up data

  • Check your site's traffic and traffic log

  • Monitor your account's resource use, like bandwidth and disk space

  • Install SSL on your website

Of course, there's plenty more you can do, but these are most often used functions.

Hostgator Cpanel: How To Log In

There are several ways you can access your cPanel. However, you'll need your login credentials, which HostGator provides in their welcome email.

Your welcome email should also have a direct link to your cPanel—the following are just alternative methods of logging in.

Option 1
If you're familiar with your server name (which should be in the welcome email), then simply log in at:

https://ServerName:2083

Option 2
Use HTTPS and your server's IP address, followed by the secure port number:

https://server-IP-address:2083

Option 3
Try only after pointing your domain to HostGator's name servers. Use HTTPS and your domain name, followed by the secure port number:

https://domainexample.com:2083

Before you can access your cPanel directly (option 3), you would have to first point your domain to HostGator's servers. Read how to point your domain to HostGator's servers here.

If you want to access your cPanel before pointing your domain name to HostGator's servers, you can use options 1 and 2.

Hostgator Cpanel: How It Works

Once you log in to your cPanel, you'll be at your dashboard. You can change how your dashboard looks like under the Preferences tab, usually located near the bottom.

Simply click Change Style to customize how your cPanel looks.

At the top, there'll be a search bar you can use to search for a specific plugin. Or you can also just use the ctrl+f command to search for a specific keyword.

The main sections of the cPanel are:

  • Domains
  • Email
  • Files
  • Software and Services

We'll go through each section briefly so you'll have a better idea of what you can do on your cPanel.

Domains
The Domains tab allows you to manage your domains. You can add a new domain to your hosting account, set redirections, or even create subdomains.

To add new domains:

  1. Click on Addon Domain. This lets you add new domains which you've bought under your current hosting account.

  2. Enter the necessary domain information, and you'll be ready to start building your new site!

Also, you can set redirects and create subdomains for any of your current domains in this section.

Email
One of the advantages of having paid hosting is that you can create customized email accounts. These are email addresses with domains that match your domain name (host@example.com).

We've mentioned before how important it is to have a professional email account for your business. If you're setting up an online store or a brand for yourself, having a customized email is important!

To create your own specialized email:

  1. Simply click on the Email section.

  2. Click on Email Accounts. From here, you can create an email for a specific domain using the drop-down tab.

If you want to login to your new email for the first time, scroll down to Email Accounts and click Access Webmail from the More drop-down.

You can bookmark your inbox for easier access next time.

File Manager
The File Manager is where you can manage all the files in your website. Simply select the website you want files from and click Go. This will open a list of folders like a Windows file explorer.

Be careful with this. Don't delete/move files unless you know exactly what you're doing. A missing file could take down your site!

Software
The Software section is where you can install popular content management systems (CMS) like WordPress, Joomla, Weebly, etc. The main tool in the Software section is QuickInstall.

QuickInstall lets you easily install WordPress and other applications. If you wanted to install WordPress, simply click on it, and then click Install WordPress. Once you do, select your domain name, and fill in your admin email, title of your site, and admin username.

After the installation is done, you'll get an email with your WordPress login. You can access the WordPress backend and start working on your site.

There are plenty of other things you can do inside your cPanel, but these are the most often used functions.

HostGator has a great support portal that has information on everything to do with cPanel. Simply head to their support portal and search for articles to help you.

For beginners, it's better to focus on the basics first. Setting up your preferences in cPanel and managing your domain should be a priority. Make sure your domain is pointed at HostGator's name servers. Once you've done that, then you can set up your emails, add files, and install tools.
