Tips and Tricks to Save Money at Gap

A classic wardrobe staple, Gap offers quality apparel at reasonable prices. However, Gap has such frequent sales that it can be difficult to know if you are actually getting the best deals possible. Follow the tips and tricks below to always know you're getting clothes and shoes at a fraction of the cost.

How to Get the Best Deals at Gap

  • Take receipt surveys. Gap occasionally prints survey opportunities on the bottom of receipts. Take the online or phone survey within a few days and receive a coupon for your next purchase.

  • Wait for a sale. Gap cycles through items quickly, meaning that most items go on sale 4 to 6 weeks after arriving in the store. Prices are normally reduced multiple times before hitting the lowest one. Look for prices that end in 7, like $4.97, which means an item is on its final sale.

  • Look for adjusted prices. If an item goes on sale within 7 days of your order, Gap will refund the difference if you bring it to their attention.

  • Use Gap Cash. Gap runs Gap Cash specials several times throughout the year. Earnings periods last for a few weeks, where you earn $25 in Gap Cash for every $50 spent. A few weeks later, the redemption period starts where you have a few days to use your Gap Cash. Gap Cash purchases can’t be combined with other coupons, but they can be used on sale items.

  • Bundle items. Gap offers free shipping on all orders over $50. Otherwise, standard shipping is a flat rate of $7. Save money by bundling multiple items into the same order to push your total over the free shipping threshold or to avoid paying multiple shipping fees on smaller orders.

  • Return for free. Gap offers free returns on every order, either in store or with free return shipping.

  • Sign up for emails. Subscribe to Gap emails to get exclusive coupons and early sales announcements. You’ll also get a welcome offer for 25% off your next purchase.

  • Use a coupon code. Gap regularly has coupon codes available, typically for 20-30% off site-wide. The best coupon code Gap will release is for 40% off site-wide.

  • Follow on social media. Gap regularly announces sales and promotions, including flash sales and weekend deals, on its Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages.

  • Reserve in store. Try online items before you buy by taking advantage of Gap’s free reserve-in-store option. Choose up to 5 items online and reserve them in your local store. Within a few hours, you’ll get an email confirmation and you can go to the store to decide if you want to buy the items or not.

  • Shop Gap Outlet stores. Gap has hundreds of outlet stores around the country. Much of the outlet merchandise is made specifically for the outlet stores, but the prices are much cheaper than regular prices and things often go on sale.

  • Sign up for a Gap Visa Card. If you are a frequent Gap shopper, it could be worthwhile to sign up for the store credit card. You’ll receive 15% off all purchases the day you sign up for the card, earn rewards for your purchases, and get 10% off when you use your card every Tuesday. Caveat: Be sure you’ll be able to pay off the balance every month, as this card has a higher interest rate than regular credit cards.

  • Use a discount. Military members receive a 10% discount every Monday and AAA members receive a 10% discount on all purchases at Gap Outlet.

When to Shop at Gap

  • Friends and Family sale. Several times throughout the year, typically in March, August, and November, Gap releases a Friends and Family coupon for 40% off your entire purchase for 4 days. Look for the coupon in store or in your email. Maximize your savings by applying the coupon to sale and clearance items.

  • January and July. Gap clearance items go on sale towards the tail end of the season, with prices up to 60% off already reduced prices.

  • February and September. The semi-annual baby and kid sale brings prices up to 40% off on almost every baby and kids clothing item.

What to Buy at Gap

  • Jeans. Gap is known for having a large selection of denim in a variety of styles and washes. Compared to similar quality jeans, Gap has great prices and frequently puts jeans on sale.

  • Maternity clothes. Gap’s maternity clothes selection is large and flattering, and the prices are much more reasonable than maternity specialty stores.

  • Baby clothes. Gap and Baby Gap sell reasonably priced baby and kids clothes that are durable and stylish.

What Not to Buy at Gap

  • T-shirts. Gap’s T-shirts tend to be overpriced for the quality of the items. Spend slightly more to get a much better product at other clothing stores.

  • Sweaters. Gap sweaters are known to pill and stretch after just a few wearings. For better success, look for Gap’s higher-end sweaters or shop somewhere else.

  • Shoes. Gap shoes can be hit or miss, but overall tend to be on the lower end of quality for the price. Women’s shoes have the best track record and children’s shoes tend to be of the lowest quality.
