Tips and Tricks to Save Money at Sierra Trading Post

You can always get a pretty good deal at Sierra Trading Post because of the wide selection of overstock items of name brand items. But why settle for just good? Make it a great deal with these tips and tricks to save even more.

How to Save at Sierra Trading Post

  • Subscribe to BarnBurners. Sierra Trading Post releases special daily deals featuring products with incredibly large discounts, often more than 80% off. These products sell out quickly, so subscribe to the BarnBurner email list (separate from the email newsletter) to be the first to know about the best daily deals.

  • Pay with a TJX Rewards credit card. Sign up for a TJX Rewards credit card with no annual fee and you’ll get 10% off your first in-store purchase. Even if you only shop online, the card earns you 1 point for every dollar spent, with 1,000 points earning you a $10 rewards certificate.

  • Follow on social media. Sierra Trading Post releases exclusive codes, runs giveaways, and announces in-store deals on its Facebook and Twitter pages. Following on social media also helps you be the first to know about exclusive one-day flash sales that happen sporadically.

  • Refer a friend. Friends get a $10 coupon when you invite them to Sierra Trading Post. Once someone you refer makes his or her first purchase, you’ll get a coupon for $10 off.

  • Use a coupon code. Sierra Trading Post has a large number of coupon codes available at any time, ranging from 10%-40% off your entire order to discounts on specific items or reduced shipping fees. Codes can’t be combined, so use the one that saves you the most money. Click here for a list of current coupon codes.

  • Sign up for emails. Email subscribers are the first to know about new coupon codes, exclusive deals, secret sales, and giveaways.

  • Sign up for MyUpdates. If there is a product you are looking for and you want to be the first to know, sign up for MyUpdates, a service that lets you know when certain items, colors, or sizes become available. You can be alerted on things as general as “ski coats” or as specific as “blue women’s hiking boots.”

  • Bundle orders. If you won’t be spending $200 or more to qualify for free shopping through the site, you could end up paying more than you have to if you’re making small orders here and there. Shipping is based on the dollar amount of your order after coupon codes have been applied, meaning the more expensive your order, the higher the shipping costs. To avoid paying multiple fees, bundle products together in one order; the shipping fee for a $50 order ($7.95 for standard shipping) is less expensive than paying to ship two $25 orders ($5.95 standard shipping per order). While you can find coupon codes that include a reduction of shipping costs, you’ll rarely see one for free shipping.

  • Return for store credit. Sierra Trading Post accepts returns up to 6 months after a product has been purchased, but you’ll have to pay the $6.95 return shipping fee for anything you send back. However, if you opt to receive Instant Store Credit for your return instead of a refund to your credit card, you’ll get a discounted rate of $2.95 return shipping as well as a discounted shipping rate of $2.95 on your next order.

  • Pick up in store. If you live near a retail location, it pays to pick up in store. Items purchased online will be ready for free pick up in the Cheyenne, Wyo.; Cody, Wyo.; Reno, Nev.; South Denver, Col.; and Boise, Idaho stores within 7 days of ordering.

  • Shop clearance. Clearance items are often out of season and may have limited colors and sizes, but the prices are up to 75% off retail. Note that coupon code discounts typically don’t work on clearance items, but the codes can be used to reduce shipping costs. For example, if you have a code for 25% off and half off shipping, the 25% off wouldn’t work on a clearance item, but you would still get half off your shipping charges.

  • Use a discount. If you are a AAA member in Wyoming, Montana, or Alaska, be sure to go through the AAA website to have an additional discount applied to your Sierra Trading Post order.

When to Shop at Sierra Trading Post

  • End of the season. Sierra Trading Post aims to clear out their inventory by offering additional discounts of up to 50% at the end of every season. Summer gear goes on sale in early September, and winter gear goes on sale in early March. The end-of-season sales tend to get better the longer they go on, meaning you can get a lower price by waiting a few weeks longer, but that also means there is less selection.

  • Mid-season. If you can’t wait until the end of the season, Sierra Trading Post usually releases a coupon code for an additional discount on clearance items around the middle of each season, such as December for winter wear and June for summer gear.

  • December 18. Sierra Trading Post participates in Free Shipping Day every year, which gives you free shipping on every order with a guarantee it will arrive by Christmas.

What to Buy at Sierra Trading Post

  • Smartwool and Woolrich brands. These popular sock brands are rarely discounted at other retailers, but the everyday prices at Sierra Trading Post are typically 20%-40% off retail. Use a coupon code to save even more.

  • Swimwear. Sierra Trading Post sells a variety of high-quality swimwear year round, with prices typically 40% or more off retail, plus added discounts from coupon codes. Swimwear is hard to find in many retailers during the off-season, making Sierra Trading Post a convenient and affordable option.

  • New items. New items usually come with discounts of 30% off or more. Shop the new section for the best selection before items start selling out, and don’t forget to pair it with a coupon code for a greater discount.

What Not to Buy at Sierra Trading Post

  • Home items. Sierra Trading Post sells a variety of home items, including luggage, organizational supplies, and home décor. These items don’t have the same high quality of name brands as the clothing selection, and because they are often heavier and more expensive, they have higher shipping costs.

  • Kid’s shoes. Compared to the adult sizes, Sierra Trading Post has a much smaller selection of kid’s shoes, especially when it comes to sales and clearance. The items they do have are often limited in color and size. It’s possible to get a good deal on kids shoes, but it is much harder to find what you are looking for.

  • Motorsports equipment. Sierra Trading Post carries a very small selection of motorsports equipment, with prices that are often not as discounted as other product categories.
