Tips and Tricks to Save Money at Express

Anyone who has shopped at Express knows to never buy anything at full price because of the frequent sales and large markdowns. However, many shoppers don't take advantage of the full savings potential that comes by combining multiple perks and offers into 1 order. Use the tips and tricks below to get a chic professional wardrobe that doesn't take your entire paycheck.

When to Shop at Express

  • Late March and mid/late September. The semi-annual clearance sale puts items on sale for up to 60% off, plus an extra 20% off already reduced items.

  • Mid-June. The Express summer sale features summer items for up to 50% off, plus a coupon code that allows you to save more when you spend more, typically $10 off $30, $30 off $75, etc.

  • Early December. Similar to the summer, the winter sale lets you stock up on cold weather items with discounts up to 50% off and progressive coupon codes.

What to Buy at Express

  • 1MX dress shirt. This slim fit men’s dress shirt is a customer favorite because of its good price, quality, and fit. Stock up during the semi-annual sale for the best deal.

  • Men’s polo shirts. Express polo shirts tend to be good quality for the price, and they frequently go on sale and make an appearance on the clearance rack.

  • Women’s office clothes. Express has a huge selection of modern and classic office clothes for women, including pencil skirts, dress pants, and jackets. These items regularly go on sale and are a great value for the price.

How to Get the Best Deals at Express

  • Sign up for text offers. Text ROCKS to 397-737 to subscribe to Express’ text program. You’ll receive messages about upcoming sales and events in store and online.

  • Bundle items. Shipping is a flat fee of $8 on all orders or free on orders of $125 or more. Take advantage by bundling multiple items into the same order to avoid paying multiple shipping costs or to bump you over the free-shipping threshold.

  • Use a coupon code. Express always has a coupon code available, either for a percentage off your total order or for a dollar amount off orders of a certain amount. Use these coupons with sale items for big savings. Express also regularly mails out physical coupons that can be used in store or online; these coupons are occasionally better than what is released to the general public.

  • Follow on social media. Express regularly posts contests and sales on its Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages. Follow along to be the first to know about new products and discounts.

  • Sign up for emails. Express email subscribers get a welcome offer of 15% off their next purchase, and they also regularly receive other sales and discounts.

  • Shop at Express Factory Outlet. Express has dozens of Express Factory Outlet locations around the country that feature similar merchandise at a fraction of the cost. Be sure to look carefully at the quality of each item, as outlet quality is typically lower than normal quality. Outlet deals are available in store only.

  • Return in store. Return online items in any Express store to avoid the $6.99 return shipping fee. Returns are accepted for 90 days after the purchase.

  • Sign up for Express Next. The free Express rewards program gives you 10 points for every dollar spent at Express or Express.com. Once you hit 2,500 points, you’ll get a $10 reward. If you get 7,500 points, you’ll be upgraded to VIP status for the rest of the year. You’ll also get a $15 reward for every 2,500 points and a free gift on your birthday.

  • Get an Express credit card. The Express Next credit card can be a good option for frequent Express shoppers looking to get the most rewards possible. Cardholders get 15 points for every dollar spent, a $10 reward for every 2,500 points, a birthday gift, access to exclusive sales, and more. This is best for loyal Express shoppers only and diligent credit card users, as retailer credit cards tend to come with higher interest rates than general cards.

What Not to Buy at Express

  • Ties. The neckties at Express have a higher price and lower quality than similar products at other stores.

  • Shoes. Most Express retail stores have only a small selection of shoes. You’ll likely have to purchase shoes online and pay for shipping and possible return shipping if the item doesn’t fit.

  • Suits. Express’ suits are hit or miss but generally have a poor fit and quality for the price.
