Tips and Tricks to Save Money at ASOS

With its huge collection of men's and women's clothing from more than 850 brands, ASOS can be your one-stop shop to get your entire wardrobe. Before you splurge on a new ensemble from this U.K. retailer, follow these tips and tricks to make sure you're spending the least amount on the latest trends.

How to Save at ASOS

  • Sign up for ASOS Premier. Frequent shoppers can benefit by paying for ASOS Premier. For $29 a year, you get unlimited free shipping, exclusive sales, and early access to sales. That’s a good deal if the majority of your closet tends to come from this retailer.

  • Get a student discount. Students are eligible for a 10% discount on every order when they create a free account on Unidays, a site that scores such deals through partnerships with select retailers. To get the discount, log in on the Unidays website and follow the link to ASOS.

  • Shop the outlet. ASOS regularly moves items from clearance to its outlet section, where you can save up to 70% off regular prices. Outlet items are generally from past seasons, but you can score great deals on summer clothes in winter and vice versa. Sizes can be limited, so don’t wait if you find a good deal.

  • Save items for later. When you do find products you want on the regular site, try to practice patience. You can favorite an item and save it for later, allowing you to easily see if the price drops. ASOS prices tend to fluctuate, so this step could help you get the best deal. It is also a great way to have items at the ready for when a coupon code becomes available.

  • Run a search before you check out. Because ASOS sells clothes from a number of brands, many of their items aren’t exclusive to the British site. Before purchasing anything, do a quick Internet search to see if it can be found at a lower price elsewhere. For example, a dress on ASOS was $10 more expensive than the same dress straight from the designer, whereas a pair of Adidas shoes was nearly $15 cheaper on ASOS than on other sites. Most of the time, though, ASOS is one of the cheapest sites (if not the cheapest site), but prices do fluctuate.

  • Use coupon codes. ASOS occasionally has coupon codes available. There is normally only one code live at a time, which is typically 10-20% off your entire order or a dollar-amount reduction off orders (depending on how much you spend). For a list of current ASOS coupon codes, visit CreditDonkey.

  • Bundle items. Standard shipping is free with every purchase over $40, and 2-day delivery is free on orders over $140. For orders below $40, shipping is a flat rate of $4. If you’re a frequent ASOS shopper, time your orders just right so you purchase multiple items at once rather than rack up a bunch of little charges.

  • Buy more, save more. ASOS runs several sales throughout the year, with bigger discounts the more you spend. For example, a recent sale offered $15 off a $100 purchase or $30 off a $150 purchase with free shipping on all orders. It pays to plan ahead and pool your items to buy at the same time.

  • Don’t return with coupon codes. ASOS’ return policy makes it tricky to return an item that was purchased with a coupon code. If you order 3 items and use a code for 20% off your entire purchase, but then return one of the items, you end up paying full price for the other two items, as only a portion of the price will be reimbursed. To avoid losing the discount, purchase items that might need to be returned in a separate order.

  • Follow on social media. ASOS sporadically does flash sales with high-value coupon codes that last for only 24-48 hours. To take advantage of these sales, follow ASOS on Twitter and Facebook, where they tend to announce sales first.

When to Shop at ASOS

  • Beginning of the season. ASOS introduces a huge collection of new items at the beginning of each season. These items tend to sell out quickly and are not often restocked. If there is something you want early in the season, purchase it right away (hopefully with a coupon code), because it might not be back.

  • Around holidays. ASOS tends to release coupon codes around a holiday each month. Larger holiday shopping days, such as Black Friday, tend to bring larger discounts. For example, Black Friday is one of the few times ASOS will release a coupon code for 30% off an order.

What to Buy at ASOS

  • ASOS brand items. Aside from hundreds of other brands, ASOS also has its own. ASOS brand items can’t be found anywhere else and tend to be less expensive than other brands for similar style and quality. Use a coupon code to reduce the prices even more.

  • Plus size clothing. Stylish plus size clothing can be hard to find, but ASOS has its own brand with a number of styles, as well as styles from other brands. Prices depend on the style and brand, but overall ASOS has one of the largest and most affordable collections of trendy plus size clothing.

  • Trendy items. ASOS has a wide variety of clothing, but some items aren’t very high quality. ASOS is a great place to get the newest styles and trendy items for amazing prices, but don’t expect the items to last more than one season. Chances are you’ll be over it next year anyway.

  • Accessories. On items where quality isn’t as important, like necklaces and hats, ASOS has a great selection of fashionable and inexpensive accessories. Again, don’t expect to have the accessories forever, but for a great price you can have a fun piece for a season or two.

What Not to Buy at ASOS

  • Improperly measured items. ASOS is somewhat notorious for its sizing, partially due to the fact that the company is based in England, where things are sized differently. Before purchasing anything, be sure to look at the actual dimensions and not just how it looks on the model. This is especially important if you are ordering multiple items, as the return policy (outlined above) can cause you to lose your discount.

  • Shoes. A common complaint on ASOS is that it’s hard to find the right fit in the shoe section. The shoe prices usually aren’t as competitive as other product areas, such as a pair of flats listed for $160 on ASOS that was easily found for $90 on a competing site.
