Tips and Tricks to Save Money at Ace Hardware

With its smaller stores and great customer service, Ace Hardware is a go-to store for many do it yourself-ers. Although many Ace Hardware stores are franchised and run individual promotions, there are still many company-wide sales and discounts to take advantage of. Use these tips and tricks to make your next project a little less expensive.

How to Get the Best Deals at Ace Hardware

  • Sign up for Ace Rewards. Join the free rewards program to earn 10 points for every dollar spent in the store. Once you hit 2,500 points, you’ll receive a $5 reward. Just for joining, you’ll get 1,000 bonus points. Ace Rewards members also get exclusive coupons and automatic lower prices on many items in the store.

  • Shop Red Hot Buys. A selection of items goes on sale every month with prices up to 40% off. Red Hot Buys are typically seasonal; you’ll see more outdoor and gardening supplies in the spring and summer, and indoor insulation and remodeling items in the fall and winter. All items are available in store and some are sold online as well.

  • Look for rebates. Ace Hardware sells a number of items that have an online mail-in rebate. Check the Ace website for a list of current rebates before shopping. Rebates change every month, and there tends to be more around holidays like Memorial Day and Labor Day.

  • Ship to store. Take advantage of the free ship-to-store service to eliminate shipping fees. Simply select the service at checkout and choose the nearest Ace Hardware location. You’ll get a call when the order is in and you’ll have 5 days to pick it up.

  • Sign up for emails. Ace Hardware email subscribers get exclusive coupons, early access to sales, and other perks and discounts.

  • Follow on social media. Ace Hardware regularly announces flash sales and deals on its Facebook and Twitter pages, as well as the best deals of the week.

  • Return in store. Save on return shipping costs by returning online items at any retail store.

  • Pay with the Ace Visa Card. Sign up for the Ace Rewards Visa Card and you’ll earn Ace points for every purchase, not just those at Ace Hardware. You’ll also earn 3% back at Ace Hardware stores, 2% back on gas and groceries, and 1% back on everything else. Since retail cards tend to have higher interest rates than more general credit cards, just be sure you’ll be able to pay off the balance each month before signing up for this card.

  • Use a coupon code. Ace Hardware occasionally offers coupon codes for online purchases, typically for a dollar amount off a purchase, such as $10 off $75. In addition, they often offer codes for a percentage off your entire purchase.

  • Bundle items. Shipping is based on the size and amount of your order, meaning you’ll pay more to ship a more expensive order. Save money by combining multiple items into the same order. For example, ordering one hex key set costs around $10 to ship, but the shipping costs don’t go up when ordering multiple hex key sets.

When to Shop at Ace Hardware

  • Brown bag sale. Several Saturdays during the year, typically in February and July, Ace Hardware runs a 20% discount off everything that can fit in a brown paper bag. This is a great time to buy smaller items. Most stores run the sale the same day, but check with your individual location for the details.

  • March. Ace Hardware runs a paint sale throughout March, during which most brands of paint and accessories are discounted. Sales change each week so wait until your brand goes on sale to buy.

  • May and October. Get great deals early in the season. In May, summer items like hoses and gardening supplies will be on sale, and in November winter items like de-icers and plant covers will be discounted.

  • August. Look for summer items and other products to go on deep clearance in early August. Most stores have items starting at $1, such as small tools and accessories.

What to Buy at Ace Hardware

  • Ace Hardware Brand. Ace sells a huge selection of store-brand merchandise that is typically cheaper than name brands but has similar quality. All Ace Hardware brand products come with a lifetime guarantee.

  • In-store services. Most Ace Hardware locations offer services such as screen repair and glass cutting. These services are rare at many other hardware stores, and tend to be very competitively priced at Ace.

  • Local items. Because most Ace Hardware stores are independently owned, most locations sell a variety of local and handmade merchandise. These items can be souvenirs, items of public interest, or related to local pastimes, such as ammunition or camping supplies. Most local items are exclusive to Ace Hardware and can be used with a sale or coupon.

  • Small individual items. Ace Hardware sells small items like nails and screws individually, so you don’t have to buy a large pack if you just need a few pieces.

What Not to Buy at Ace Hardware

  • Paint supplies. Ace Hardware’s paint selection, especially the paint accessories, tends to be more expensive than similar products sold at other hardware stores. One of the only times to consider buying paint at Ace is during the March paint sale.

  • Tools. Although Ace Hardware has a large tool selection, its prices tend to be much higher than the same products at other stores.

  • Plumbing supplies. Ace Hardware’s plumbing supplies tend to be lower quality and more expensive than at other hardware stores.
