The rewards for this Visa Card are straightforward cash back bonuses. Once you become a cardholder, you’ll receive 5% cash back on purchases made at supermarkets, drugstores, and gas stations, as well as on purchases made with utilities such as the electric and phone companies. Purchases through the Citi Bonus Cash Center, a grouping of 400 retailers, also earn average cash back of 5%. Your monthly statement will show your cash back as “Dividend Dollars”. The rewards program itself is a tremendous benefit for this card and allows you to earn cash on necessary monthly expenses.

This card also gives cardholders access to multiple benefits and programs. First, as a cardholder you’ll have access to educational topics such as investment and budget planning to help you maintain financial responsibility. In regard to security, the card offers the use of virtual account numbers, which can be obtained “with one click” to avoid giving out the actual account number on Internet or phone purchases. The card is available as a photo card, which means that there can be no question about use if the card should be lost or stolen. You’ll have access to Identity Monitor, Citi’s credit monitoring service that helps you keep tabs on your credit and guard against identity theft. Finally, the Dividend Platinum Select Visa Card offers zero liability on fraudulent charges. All of these security benefits mean less worry for college students and their parents.

There are various insurance benefits with this card as well, a useful tool for college students who may be living away from home. As a cardholder, you’ll be able to opt for extended warranties and purchase protection on major purchases, which means that you don’t have to worry about products that stop working within the first year. For students who are traveling, a purchase of tickets with the card provides travel and emergency assistance both in the U.S. and abroad. With those ticket purchases, you are also enrolled in a one million dollar accident insurance policy for your trip. Additionally, car rentals on the card are covered by an insurance policy so that you don’t have to worry about accepting the rental company’s coverage.

With a combination of rewards and security, as well as insurance programs, the Citi Dividend Platinum Select Visa Card provides a safe and easy way for college students to build and maintain credit history.
