Bottom Line

Good rewards card for small business owners

WHO THE CARD IS GOOD FOR

  • Small business owners who need the flexibility of being able to pay off their purchases over time (See Rates & Fees).

  • Business owners who want to earn points on purchases without having to juggle specific spending categories and no annual fee (See Rates & Fees).

  • Entrepreneurs who prefer to reinvest their rewards in their business and employees.

REASONS TO CHOOSE THIS CARD

We've picked out the benefits that, in our opinion, make the Blue Business Plus card worthwhile for business owners.

  1. You want straightforward rewards: You earn 2X Membership Reward® points on the first $50,000 spent on eligible purchases each calendar year, 1 point per dollar thereafter. Eligible purchases are purchases for goods and services minus returns and other credits. Eligible purchases do NOT include fees or interest charges, balance transfers, purchases of travelers checks, purchases or reloading of prepaid cards, or purchases of other cash equivalents.

  2. You're looking for a 0% APR introductory promotion: The card offers a 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for 12 months. After that, a variable rate, currently 14.74% - 20.74% Variable (See Rates & Fees). Keep in mind, you still need to make at least the minimum payment due.

  3. You want to pass on the annual fee: Unlike some business rewards credit cards, the Blue Business Plus card doesn't come with an annual fee. And there is no annual fee to add extra cards for your employees.

  4. You need help tracking expenses: You'll automatically get access to American Express® Business App, which allows you to match up images of your receipts to purchases made with your card so you can categorize them in QuickBooks (with Connect to QuickBooks).

  5. You want extra coverage when you travel: Travel accident insurance, baggage insurance, car rental loss and damage insurance, and 24-hour roadside assistance hotline are just some of the benefits available to members.

  6. You're not interested in a charge card: With a traditional American Express charge card, you are be responsible for paying the balance in full every month. The Blue Business Plus card, however, gives you the option to spread the payments out over time, with interest.

  7. You want flexible redemption options: Points earned with the card can be redeemed for travel (via AMEX transfer partners), entertainment, merchandise, and gift cards from more than 500 brands.

WHY YOU SHOULD LOOK ELSEWHERE

No business credit card is perfect, and there are drawbacks to keep in mind before applying for the Blue Business Plus card.

  • You normally charge expenses when traveling overseas: If you plan to use a credit card to pay for expenses overseas, be prepared to pay a premium to do so. This card comes with a 2.7% foreign transaction fee (See Rates & Fees), which adds an additional $27 on to every $1,000 you spend. While that's slightly lower than the typical 3% some business cards charge, you can find plenty of no-foreign transaction fee options.

If you frequently travel abroad, consider using a credit card with no foreign transaction fees instead.

Compared to the other business credit cards we've mentioned here, the Blue Business Plus card is a solid choice if you prefer a no-muss, no-fuss approach to earning 2x rewards (on the first $50,000 spent in eligible purchases each calendar year, 1 point per dollar thereafter).

If you want the ability to earn rewards without having to jump through an endless number of hoops, this is one card you'll want to seriously consider.

As always, terms and limitations apply.
