Becker is one of the most well-known and longest-standing CPA review programs available today. Many say it's the best in the market too, yet it's also one of the priciest. Is it worth the money it costs to use Becker CPA Review?

Who Should Use Becker CPA Review?

  • You prefer live classes: Becker doesn't rely on digital books or online videos alone. They also offer live classes for those who prefer that in-person teaching. If you aren't organized enough to keep yourself going with self-study, a live class may help you be more effective in your studying.

  • You adore flashcards and lots of practice tests: Although it's an extra cost, Becker offers access to portable flashcards for you to really hammer in the regulations. They also offer the opportunity to purchase extra tests, including a final review or supplemental questions for areas that you can't master.

  • You can finish your studies in 18 months: If you aren't super organized or haven't planned your study time, you could find yourself running out of time with Becker. You have 18 months to use the subscription, so you need to plan accordingly. If you are motivated and ready to get this CPA under your belt within that time, then this program may suffice.

Reasons We Like Becker CPA Review

  • They offer live online classes. If you aren't the type who can succeed at self-studying, you may thrive on the structure of a live class, yet still in the comfort of your own home. The live online classes are live webinars at scheduled times.

  • They offer a self-study program. If you don't have a regular schedule that allows you to attend regular classes, the self-study option may be helpful. You get all of the materials and study them on your own time. Of course, you must be an organized and focused person to utilize this option.

  • Becker provides a pre-assessment and then tailors your studies accordingly. Becker uses the results of the pre-assessment to help you learn where to focus your studies. They also offer progress tests as you work through your studies. This can help you see where you've improved and where you may need more focus.

  • The materials match the CPA exam. If you feel better knowing the format of the test before you take it, you'll appreciate the Becker study materials. The sample questions, task-based simulations and mock tests all have the same format as you'd see on the test. This can help alleviate a little of the test anxiety that can occur when taking such an important test.

  • You can purchase a Final Review after finishing your regular Becker Review studies. Before you take the test, Becker offers one more review opportunity. The Final Review offers new lectures and tailored test questions, both multiple choice and task simulations, to help prepare you right before you take the exam.

  • You can sign up for a free demo. Becker CPA recognizes that each student has different studying needs and habits. They offer a free, 21-day demo of the program, allowing you to determine if it's the right program for you.

  • You can purchase flashcards for easier memorization. While a large part of the CPA exam is about applying the concepts, there are core concepts you'll need to memorize. Becker offers access to these core concepts in the form of printed or digital flashcards (for purchase) to help you in your studies.

  • Becker receives updates from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants regularly. This updated information allows Becker to make sure their study materials are always relevant to the current test rather than memorizing outdated material.

  • You'll have access to SkillMaster videos. These videos coach you through tackling the task-based simulation questions, which take much more than memorizing concepts.

  • They offer a variety of practice or mock tests. Taking mock tests that mimic the material on the CPA exam can help you know if you are ready or where you need to focus your studies. You can retake the mock exams if you don't do as well as you hoped the first time around.

The Becker CPA Review Mobile App:
One feature many Becker students love is the mobile app. You get the same material on the app as you do on your computer. All material and progress syncs so that you never have to worry about losing your spot. While you probably can't do a lot of studying while you are out and about, if you have a few spare moments, using the app can help you memorize important topics or review areas you struggle with.

Reasons You May Want to Look Elsewhere

  • Becker is one of the most expensive reviews available. Quality comes at a price, and Becker certainly follows suit. They have the reputation of being the most expensive program available today. Many people studying for the CPA have trouble affording its high cost.

  • The lectures are long (and boring). Becker relies on the lecture format for a large part of their studies. For example, the auditing portion of the program includes 18 hours of video and the financial portion includes 30 hours of video. They don't break the material down into bite-sized lessons, which can make it difficult for some to really comprehend the information.

  • If you don't pass, you don't have access to the materials after 18 months. Becker does offer what they call the "Becker Promise," which provides you with free tuition to repeat the course. While that sounds great, the list to qualify for the repeat course at no cost is a mile long, making it hard to get approved. If you don't qualify, you can renew the course for 50% of the full price.

Becker CPA Review Discounts:
You can purchase the "Becker Bundle," which gives you access to everything Becker offers in one package. You may save a little money rather than buying the items individually. Before you buy, though, make sure you'll use everything (including the flashcards and final review).

How It Compares

  • CPAExcel. CPAExcel costs less than Becker and you have access to the review as long as you need. Once you pass the CPA, you retain access for another full year. CPAExcel includes 12,000 multiple-choice questions and 500 task-based questions. Becker includes 6,200 multiple choice and 300 task-based questions. They also offer online video series and professional mentoring.

  • Roger CPA Review. Roger CPA Review costs less than what Becker charges. The highest package (Elite) provides unlimited access, and their lower programs offer 24-month access. Roger CPA does offer access to physical textbooks, which can be beneficial for those who learn better with books rather than digital media. Roger CPA includes AICPA-released practice questions.

  • Gleim CPA Review. Gleim CPA is also less expensive than Becker, which comes as no surprise. Gleim's video lectures are less informative than Becker's, but they are also shorter. If you are a visual learner, you may prefer Becker's style. Like Becker, Gleim offers practice questions that adapt to your knowledge; the more you know, the harder the questions get and vice versa.

Bottom Line

If you have deep pockets, Becker certainly provides many benefits. If it's way out of your budget, there are other suitable programs, and each benefits different learning styles. You have to decide which program suits your study style and time needed to access the program.
