Rewards Program

Every time you buy something on the AirTran Airways A+ Rewards Credit Card, you earn A+ Reward Dollars. You earn 1 A+ dollar for every dollar you spend on most purchases. You earn 2 A+ dollars for every dollar you spend booking travel with AirTran and Southwest Airlines.

Once you earn enough A+ dollars, you can start converting them into free flights. It takes 1,200 A+ dollars to earn an A+ Rewards Credit and 16 Rewards Credits to earn a round-trip coach flight. This round-trip flight is good for over 90 destinations through AirTran and Southwest. If you use your card frequently, you can earn flights throughout the year.

Signup Bonus

The AirTran Airways A+ Rewards Credit Card has a few signup bonuses to welcome new cardholders. After you make your first purchase, you earn 2 business class upgrades for AirTran and Southwest Airlines. If you spend at least $1,000 on your card within its first 3 months, you earn a bonus 16 A+ Reward Credits. This is enough for a roundtrip coach flight.

In addition, you can also earn bonus points for transferring over a balance from another credit card. Every dollar you roll over during the first 90 days gets you 1 free A+ Reward points. This is up to a maximum of 9,600 points, which is good for half a free roundtrip flight. There is a 3% fee charged on balance transfers, so this deal isn’t completely free of charge.

Anniversary Bonus

This card also gives an anniversary bonus to reward returning customers. Each year you renew your card, you receive 2 bonus A+ Reward Credits. This gives you a good head start toward earning your next free flight and for justifying the card’s $69 annual fee.

Pros

  • Earns A+ reward dollars on all your purchases. Earn double rewards for purchases made directly with AirTran and Southwest Airlines
  • Credits are good for free roundtrip coach flights through AirTran and Southwest Airlines
  • 2 Business class seat upgrades after the first purchase
  • Bonus reward credits for a roundtrip flight if you spend $1,000 during the first 3 months
  • Anniversary bonus worth a 1/8 of a roundtrip flight to renewing cardholders

Cons

  • Charges an annual fee of $69. Fee is not waived for the first year.
  • No introductory 0% APR.

Bottom Line

A solid, inexpensive choice for travelers that frequently fly with AirTran and Southwest Airlines. Cardholders that want other types of rewards should look elsewhere as this card primarily helpful for travelers on these two airlines.
